New Delhi, Jul 22 (HT) : With three of its senior leaders facing opposition heat over corruption charges, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday claimed it has accessed a sting that establishes a liquor scam in Congress-ruled Uttarakhand.
BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman at a press conference claimed the sting video has proof that Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat and his personal secretary were involved in a liquor scam while the state was hit by the 2013 flash floods.
She said the sting shows the chief minister's personal secretary negotiating bribes for changes to the state's policy on the sale of alcohol.
"The Uttarakhand chief minister and his personal secretary were involved in a liquor scam and loot during Uttarakhand floods," Sitharaman alleged.
More than 6000 people were killed and thousands displaced in the flash floods which hit the state in June 2013.
Reacting to the allegations, CM Harish Rawat reportedly said the authenticity of the tape has to be ascertained first.
The CM said the liquor policy was framed by the cabinet and that no private party was involved in it.
"The policy has just been decided...how can it be changed already?" Rawat told NDTV, adding that he would "definitely take action" if the charges against his assistant are proven.
BJP's counter attack comes at a time when the opposition is gunning for the resignation of three leaders -- external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje and Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Chouhan.
While Swaraj and Raje are under fire for helping tainted former IPL chief Lalit Modi, who faces an Enforcement Department probe for alleged money laundering and forex violations, Chouhan is under pressure to quit over the Vyapam admission and recruitment scandal.
The BJP decided to go on the offensive after the Congress and other opposition parties disrupted parliament for two days in a row demanding the resignation of the three leaders.
