Mangalore, May 26: A Mauritius patient, Ravindra Kumar Podarut aged 18 years had hearing problems with the left ear since childhood and had bad smelling discharge from left ear since 9 years. His hearing loss was progressively increasing and had reached to the stage of nil hearing in the left ear, this ear was having the dangerous disease which had the capacity of causing bone destruction and could lead to brain-related complications and even death, if not treated in time. 

This kind of disease is called "Cholesteatoma" .The boy was referred to the department of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Sophisticated investigations like Computed Tomography, and other audiological and Otological procedures were carried out, Decision to operate was taken and operation was done by the team of ENT specialists surgeons headed by Dr P Hazarika. According to Dr P Hazarika, professor and head of department of ENT at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal all the dangerous diseased Cholesteatoma was removed from the ear completely leaving behind the tiny bone in the ear responsible for hearing, one tiny bone which was completely destroyed was reconstructed with patient's own tragal cartilage (Ear Bone). 

The surgery was successful and patient regained his hearing after seventh day of surgery and his hearing is improving everyday and patient will have complete hearing restoration after a month.

 Dr D P Saraswat, chief operating officer and medical superintendent congratulating the team of ENT surgeons said  "the expertise of the ENT surgeons and operational standards of the department of ENT is tested and proven equal to any of the best ENT set up's in India ". He said that commitment of department of ENT to provide the best of ENT care to the people of coastal belt and has attained its fulfillment, but they will strive for continuous improvement of facilities available.
