Mangaluru: Water problem continues while MCC limps to repair pipes

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Aug 5: The water shortage during rainy season was least expected. But the current scarcity which had occurred due to damaged pipes still remains.

Two pipelines each of 18 mgd capacity at Kannur connecting from Thumbay had burst on Saturday, stopping water supply to the city.

Hosts of politicians including the local MLA, MLC, mayor and league of officials including the deputy commissioner have visited the place. They have sent a clear message to the residents of the city that they are unable to get even two pipes repaired in time.

Area flooded

The area where the pipes got burst was flooded with water. That is the main reason which has delayed the repair work. The pipes are fixed some feet below the ground level which makes the repair work tough. As some locals had dumped soil on the area of the pipeline, it was difficult to identify the exact location of the pipeline. That work alone took two days. Then they had to dig and repair. Before that the water had to be pumped out from the area which was not an easy job.

On Monday night one pipe was repaired and water was let out in that pipe. But as that pipe was connected to a KUDCEMP pipe, somewhere on the way, the water reached that pipe and the leakage increased. That delayed the repair work of the other pipe. Hence they stopped the water supply again.

People still waiting

The authorities have promised that by Wednesday evening water will start flowing in both the pipes and the city will get water supply as usual. Meanwhile the water shortage continues with tankers coming to the rescue of residents in a small way.

Authorities have instructed the locals not to dump soil on the pipeline though the instruction came very late. Better late than never anyway.

In short we are not equipped to even to fix two water pipes in reasonable time. Excuses and excuses are being given. Till then government cars moving from city to Kannur and coming back is a common scene.

While some of the areas in Baikampadi and Katipalla received water from Wednesday afternoon itself, in our Matadakani area within Mangalore city received water today on Thursday morning after 8 am. Vote Bank politics even in supply of water by MCC after Six days?

So much hype for a proposed smart city has now fallen flat on its face. If basic amenities take so long to be restored, what can we expect in a so called smart city. No proper water supply, no reliable electricity, horrible roads, no visible footpaths, indiscriminate dumping of garbage and debris, choked drains, haphazard traffic which gets jammed at the of hat,....do I need to say more. Not to forget the people themselves who so often don't show any civic sense or responsibility. Are we living in a dream world where a smart city will solve our problems created by ourselves and others? Get real guys, we have only limited space and infrastructure with which we have to manage. Make what we have right and then think about a smart city!

I am sure that now we all know the value of "WATER". Can we allow Netravathi Diversion ( Yettina Hole) project to go head ?
Fortunately, the rain is helping us to some extent - at-least store the roof water.
Looking at this picture / report I assume that next two days also there will not be water in pipe.

The situation is serious. People are going without water and in the meantime people dealing in supply of waters through tanker are making trying to make quick buck.

The way the repair work is limping, it may take a couple of days or even more to restore water supply to The City. In the meantime - the citizens are going through a TRAUMA.

This is a lesson our City administration should take seriously. Not to panic when things go wrong rather plan things on future perspective.
Water is so important that prolonged non-supply of water would make life difficult for the citizens. They have to consider better alternatives/solutions for any such occurrences in the future.
I am of the opinion that most of wells in and around the city are already closed.

Instead of Authorities orally instructing the locals not to dump soil on the pipeline, they should impose heavy fine on all those who have already dumped soil and heavy building debris on these pipelines.
Those who have already dumped soil on these pipelines are highly influential builders and no one dares to touch them as everyone is on their payroll.

This is classic example for YUDDHAKAALADALLI THALEEMU NADESUVUDU. Was the Corporator of the area sleeping when unlawful activities were going on in his ward? Isn't the water supply authority supposed to conduct periodic checks along the pipeline? Where are Nalin Kumar Kateel, J. R. Lobo, Ivan D'Souza, U. T. Khadar, Ramanath Rai, and Vinayakumar Sorake? Is giving statements to the media enough? Whom are our elected representatives fooling?

What a pathetic condition in Mangalore a proposed smart city!
Sine last FIVE days no water and no responsible person from MCC or politician is bothered to issue statement as to when they will restore water supply. Till Wednesday afternoon no water is supplied to our Area.
Corporator and their gang may not require water as they drink 'Neat'. But other people require water for at least bath & toilets.
Next time our Votes will never go to these sitting Corporators who openly tell the residents to take water from Private tankers and MCC cannot help in this case.

Pl let us know the name of that land developer who dumped huge pile of mud on that water pipe at Kannur and also ran their heavy loaded trucks and JCB on that pipes to go across the pipe to fill the land. I understand this developer is very close to a minister. He is the root cause of all these water problems.
Next turn will be the water pipeline at Kottara chowki junction where also a developer is filling the low lying fields beyond the water pipes and his fully loaded trucks and JCB are running over this pipeline every day number of times, which I see daily while going to my work place in Kulur.

Our Mangaluru Corporation and the authorities need to undergo some disaster/emergency recovery management training. There is no alternative arrangement in case of unforeseen disasters or emergencies. Mangalore is going to be categorized as a smart city and our public service system and other emergency facilities should cope with the emerging growth of Industries and population.

During 1970's it is a common sight when the GI water pipe leaks, workmen dig the spot, remove the water by hand or a lota, take cycle tube, wrap it around the leak so tightly the leak stops. We jocularly call it as cycle tube technology !!! Mangaluru will become smart city in coming years by getting Rs.500 crores for 5 years. Surely there are many smart people to utilize this amount. Smart people to dump soil, mud, garbage etc on water lines etc. It is very funny with advancement of engineering, science, technology and with ample manpower, money, equipment etc the situation is not rectified even after 3 days. Let God Save Us.

Mr. Pai cycle tube worked for small pipes during that time. I think Engineers at MCC, who do not make a footpath while concreting the road no idea lorry or bus tube technology would work on these large pipes.
