Eight more farmers end lives in State


Bengaluru, Aug 9 (DHNS): As many as eight debt-stressed farmers committed suicide in the State in the last 24 hours.

Kanthraj (35), a farmer from Guttinakere village in Arsikere taluk of Hassan district, ended his life by hanging himself from a tamarind tree on his farm on Friday night. It is learnt the victim had taken loans of Rs 5 lakh from a bank and moneylenders to sink a borewell on his one-acre land. All four attempts failed to yield water. Further, he had suffered crop loss. He is survived by mother Sanna Tayamma and wife Latha. MLA Shivalingegowda visited the house of the deceased farmer.

Kappannagowda, 55, from Salgame hobli in Hassan taluk, who had consumed poison in a bid to end his life a few days back, breathed his last on Friday. It is said the farmer had borrowed Rs 2.5 lakh from moneylenders for agricultural purposes. A complaint has been lodged in the Hassan Rural police station.

Two farmers from Piriyapatna taluk of Mysuru district ended their lives in separate incidents on Saturday.

Balu alias Jagadish (43), a ginger cultivator from Maratikoppalu, ended his life by consuming poison. He is survived by his wife and two children.

In another incident, Mahadev (52) committed suicide by consuming poison. The victim, who had taken a loan of Rs 8 lakh from a bank, had suffered huge losses after his tobacco crop withered away.

In yet another suicide reported at Chikkabichanahalli of Hunsur taluk, Bholegowda (50) ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house. The victim, it is said, had taken a loan of Rs 4 lakh from a bank. He has left behind wife and three children.

A 35-year-old farmer from Machanahalli in Mandya taluk committed suicide on Saturday. Siddaraju had taken loans running into Rs 3 lakh on his land measuring 20 guntas.

Unable to repay the mounting loans, Bharamappa H Chikkamattur (65), a farmer from Meduru near Rattihalli of Haveri taluk, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house on Friday.

The victim used to cultivate maize and cotton on seven-acre dry leased land. He had borrowed Rs 3 lakh from moneylenders. Rattihalli police have registered a case.

Shankrappa Narasingappa Lamani (55) of Suwarnagiri Tanda in Shirahatti taluk of Gadag district hanged himself from the ceiling of his house on Saturday. The debt-ridden farmer was upset after maize and green gram cultivated on a two-acre dryland withered owing to poor monsoon.
