Chandigarh, Aug 13 (IANS): The Punjab government on Thursday sought more Border Security Force (BSF) troopers along the state's 553-km long border with Pakistan.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said that deployment of more BSF personnel on the international border with Pakistan was necessary to prevent cross-border infiltration.

Speaking to media at Mohali adjoining Chandigarh, he said he had sent a communique to union Home Minister Rajnath Singh for beefing up deployment of security forces along the Punjab border to avert any kind of terror strike.

Terrorists from Pakistan had launched a terror attack on Dinanagar town in Punjab's Gurdaspur district on July 27, leaving seven people dead.

Badal said he had personally visited some forward posts of the BSF adjoining the border and observed that more personnel were needed keep watch.

"The international border adjoining territory of Punjab should have same strength of forces on the pattern of Jammu and Kashmir border," he said.

Badal, who is also home minister, said that there was a chance of revival of militancy in the state but the Punjab Police was capable and ready to combat any anti-national and anti-state activities.

He said that Punjab would further strengthen special protection units of Punjab Police with latest weapons and equipment to meet any exigency.
