Udupi, Aug 15: CPI (M) members staged a massive protest and public meeting ahead of Independence Day on Friday August 14 at Service Bus Stand near Udupi here.

Addressing the protestors, G V Sriram Prakash Shetty, state secretary, said, “Now, India is celebrating its 69th Independence Day. But there are people living without shelter. There is need to review the present circumstances. The central government is not working in favour of farmers. We have started awareness programmes from July 1, 2015, and conducted several campaigns at taluk and village level.”

Shetty further said, “The people’s representatives always win with their false promises. India is still facing unemployment problems and is also battling an economic crisis. Some parts of the rural areas have not been developed. We are not economically independent and not strong enough even after 68 years of freedom. The CPI (M) is against dilution of the government’s role in the proposed Land AcquisitionBill.”

He urged the people’s support for the Left parties. The protestors demanded restoration of sugar factory, permanent seawall for preventing sea erosion, completion of national highway construction, free distribution of RTC to the poor under 94 C law, withdrawal of land acquisition ordinance, investigation into the suspicious death of Akshatha Kottari and control of inflation.

The CPI (M) party members held the meeting simultaneously until nightfall, commemorating the history of freedom fighters, shouting slogans, and rendering patriotic songs throughout the day.

Balakrishna Shetty and K Shankar were present.
