Mangaluru: Over 25 people pledge to donate organs at UCA programme

Mangaluru, Aug 15: In a commendable gesture, over 25 people pledged to donate their organs/bodies during a meaningful programme organized by United Christian Association (UCA) in association with KMC Manipal at Kalaangan here on Saturday August 15.

The programme was organized with the intenting of creating awareness on organ and body donation among the public.

The programme was presided over by Alban Menezes, president of UCA. Dr Antony Sylvan D'Souza, associate dean and vice-principal of KMC Manipal, Louis J Pinto, president of Mandd Sobhann and champion blood donor, Benedict Noronha, the senior-most donor and advocate at Udupi and legal adviser of UCA were the guests of honour.

Dr Antony Sylvan D'Souza delivered the keynote address explaining the importance of body and organ donation. "Proper awareness should be created regarding the body and organ donation. Body donation is very vital for medical students to study anatomy. As of today, the donors mainly come from Hindu community and not from Christian community. Hence such awareness programme by the community itself was the need of the hour. I congratulate UCA for this effort. By donating organs one can save many lives."

Louis J Pinto who has been promoting blood donation in a big way spoke on the occasion and lauded the efforts of UCA. Benedict Noronha also spoke on the occasion.

Robert Rosario read out the will and declaration and more than 25 people voluntarily registered as body and organ donors.

The programme was compered by Francis D'Costa, vice president of UCA. Paul Lobo Siddakatte proposed the vote of thanks.

    A good move.One should think nowa days that self might be in Need of organs.so better to think and always carry a donation Card with when one healthy is.There are so many People who are badly in Need of organs .even youngones.At present People are slowly thinking of this,since previously were thinking of taking of others paying Money.but needy are more donors are less,second we are notsure donors are healthy ?.Otherside cremetorium,cemetries are also a Problem nowadays .so think bit further and decide .

    Of what help is a body after death if it is buried or cremated? If one donates his organs to the needy and the rest of the body for anatomical studies it will do a lot of good to humanity and a part of dead donor will be living in a body of the recipient and will also live in the minds of kith & kin, relatives, friends and others. My appreciation goes to the 24 people who have decided to donate their bodies.

    It is indeed a great and noble action to donate an organ so that some one else can live. While congratulating the donors I would add that even at my ripe old age I have decided to donate organs to people who may stand in need of the same.

    As of today donor come from hindu community...good observations

    Both muslim n christian community should come forward to make use of their body parts after their death...havung said so today on the day of our independence day i take an oath n pleadge to donate my organs to the needy irrespective of their faith after my death n i am going to advise my next of kin to ute my wish....
