Congress cares for those in pyjama-kurta, not suit-boot: Rahul Gandhi

Amethi, Aug 19 (IANS): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday pushed for his party's government that cares for people in "shirts, chappals and kurta-pyjamas" unlike Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "suit-boot ki sarkar that encourages crony capitalism", and said people of India were starting to see through the latter's empty promises.

On a two-day visit of his parliamentary constituency Amethi, Rahul said: "The PM made many promises - OROP for army personnel, to bring back black money, and to help farmers. When we showed him Lalit Modi as a symbol of black money, PM made a speech saying corruption in India has ended. I don't know which India he is talking about. There is Vyapam in MP, another scam in Maharashtra, and Sushmaji and Vasundharaji, whose son does business deals with Lalit Modi, are protecting a fugitive. Still our PM says India is corruption-free."

Acknowledging that Modi's dip in credibility has helped Congress's political revival, Rahul said it was sad, however, that the people of India were being taken for a ride. He said Modi had made a habit of making one promise to escape from keeping another.

"It is beneficial for us, and for the Congress party. But it is the country's loss. Modi made promises to the people of the country. A PM's words should carry weight. It is very sad that our PM's words carry no weight. In Bihar, he promised 1.5-lakh-crore package. But ex-servicemen staging a sit-in demanding Rs 8000-crore package are being denied their due. Modi doesn't want to hear anything. He only wants to speak," Rahul said.

He also criticised Union finance minister Arun Jaitley, saying the government had changed the way GDP was measured in order to project better economic growth. "They don't want to acknowledge that India's growth rate has slowed. Instead, they've changed the system. They've made a joke of the development that was promised and everything you all expected from the government," Rahul said.
