Mangalore, Jul 18: A protest was held in front of the office of Ganesh Beedis by South Kanara bidi workers' federation affiliated to the All-India Trade Union Congress here on Tuesday July 17.

The protest was held against the management of bidi companies for violating the agreement signed on January 30 last year. The federation said as per the agreement signed before the joint labour commissioner, the management had agreed to pay Rs 4,500 to every worker as arrears of dearness allowance for ten years by June 30, 2007.

General Secretary of the federation, S Chandappa Anchan said the promised amount has been not paid by the beedi companies. The management is cheating the workers by paying Rs 1,000 while getting them to sign the voucher for Rs 4,500. This issue has been brought to the notice of the department of labour, police and the deputy commissioner, stated the general secretary.

President of the South Kanara bidi workers federation P Sanjeev and others were present on this occasion.
