Udupi, Nov 10: The family of a man living at Manikattu in Gundmi within Saligrama town panchayat near Kota in the district had recently cremated a body, believing it to be belonging to their relative. They had thought that the body of a person who had died in a road accident at Suratkal last week belonged to their missing relative. But after funeral and post-funeral rites were conducted, the man they thought had died, came alive and knocked at their doors!

Shankar (48) from Barkur Bennekudru near Brahmavar had married Gouri, a resident of Gundmni Manikattu some years back. Thereafter, Shankar continued to stay in the house of his wife, and did miscellaneous jobs. The couple has three children.

Since sometime, Shankar had stayed away from his family, and was not to be seen. The family was in the dark as to where he had gone or what he was doing. During the last week, the family members came to know that the body of a person who died in road accident near Suratkal had remained unclaimed. Some relatives went there and identified the body to be belonging to Shankar. They claimed this body, brought it to Shankar's hometown, Bennekudru, and cremated the body there.

After some days, a relative of Shankar, during his visit to a bar in Sasthan near Gundmi, was discussing something with another man, when he referred to the death of Shankar in an accident. Another person who overheard this conversation claimed that he had secured a job for Shankar in a hotel at Kalaburagi sometime back. He also called Shankar over phone and got confirmation that he was hale and hearty at Kalaburagi.

Some days thereafter, Shankar came home. His relatives were happy to see him alive. So far, no one knows the identity of the body which was cremated by the relatives of Shankar.
