Udupi, Nov 20: A slush fields sports event was organized by Lions Club Shirva-Manchakal zone at Nyarma Hosamane Bakimar paddy field, Shirva on Sunday, November 15.
Inaugurating the rural sports meet, the state sports minister Abhayachandra Jain said, "Our ancestors in Tulunadu were cultivating paddy for sustenance and used to organize Kambala – an energetic sportive race of buffaloes, tug-of-war, running in slush fields and rural games to entertain them during lull days in monsoon season. Presently modern technology has been introduced to get higher yield in lesser area of cultivation. The Lions Club of Shirva – Manchakal, has been striving to promote rural sports thereby preserving the distinct Tulunadu culture, which is indeed noteworthy.”
Lions district governor D Sridhar Shenava, Deputy governors B Divakar Shetty and A R Ujanappa lauded the effort of organisers.
Event convenor Arul D’Souza was honoured on the occasion for his efforts.
Varija Poojary, president, Shirva gram Panchayat, Ida Gibba D’souza, member, Zilla Panchayat, Krishna Poojary Taluk Panchayat member, V Subbayya Hegde, Satish Shetty, president, Lions regional, Yermal Sashidhar K Shetty, coordinator, Lions district, A Shambu Shetty, Ratan Shetty, V T Hegde, event convener Gregory Fernandes were also present.
The valedictory session was presided by Prof Wilfred D’souza, Ex- District Governor, while Rohit Kumar Kateel, International high jump sportsperson, also a film actor ('Koti Chennaya' movie) was the chief guest.
Rohit Kumar congratulated and appreciated the club for organizing such a programme and said it would be an example for the modern youth to see and learn their proud ancestral traditions.
Veronica Cornelio, President, KS&DL, Usha Shetty, Nyarma, Hassan Ibrahim, HR Residency, were present on the dais, Joseph Mathias, Dubai was honoured at this moment.
Wilson Rodrigues, president, Lions Club, Shirva- Manchakal welcomed the gathering. Melvyn Aranha, secretary, proposed vote of thanks. Norbert Machado and Gilbert Pinto compered the programme.
