Kerala cops arrest Catholic priest for ‘raping’ 15-year-old girl

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 8 (HT) : Police on Tuesday arrested a 41-year-old fugitive Catholic priest in Kochi on the charge of repeatedly raping a teenager for more than four months when he was attached with the Kottapuram diocese in north Kerala.

Police said Father Edwin Figarez was on the run for the past six months, since he was accused of paedophilia and sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl, who he had met at the church during prayers.

The crime was revealed when the girl’s school noticed behavioural changes in her and she told her parents about the traumatic ordeal. Her parents immediately approached police and a medical examination confirmed the sexual abuse.

An officer said the class 9 student was abused till March 28, four months since the torment began.

The priest ran away to Dubai in April after the police complaint was filed against him and appealed for bail at the Kerala high court, which initially granted his wish till May 5. He was questioned by police after he returned to India on May 2.

But after the high court rejected his bail plea on May 6, he again ran away. On Tuesday morning, he surrendered before police in Kochi and said he was all along hiding in Bengaluru.

The Kottapuram diocese initially dismissed the allegations against the priest but suspended him after police confirmed the charges.

Let us wait till the priest confess the crime.I remember the famous Madatharuvi murder case where an innocent priest was imprisoned. Finally before he died his innocence was proved by the family of the guilty. All their families were getting mentally challenged children. This full story came in newspapers and they asked pardon from the priest who was at his last days. But his parents died by that time without getting a chance to see their son's innocence proved. Let us wait for the priest to confess. If he did it he can't hide it for long. Otherwise let the truth come out. Priest or somebody else ?

My my, look at the knives drawn at this handsome, and reasonably young priest!! He is human, he is fallible, as we all are. But to say, “hang him”, “castrate him” and then gloat over the fact that the girl’s parents have gone to the police is pretty going beyond the boundary. Please do not do that, for all that, he might have asked God for forgiveness, and must have been pardoned already, and to publish this saga in such a manner is certainly is like going thru the roof and much like we all are saints?? Couldn’t we all sit under OUR roof and hammer out a solution to drown the problem for once and for all???

    Mr. Noronha,

Just for the fact that he is an ordained priest, anything you say just does not matter. As you say if he realized his mistake and asked for God's pardon, he would have renounced priesthood and stayed in the country instead of running away from legal formalities not once but twice. Renouncing his profession and marrying would have given a picture that he understood priesthood is not his cup of tea, though late.

While 'hang him', 'castrate him' is too much of us to say, he surely is liable to be punished doubly because he has erred twice as much - once by his action towards a minor and the other doing it as a priest.

@n Mangalore Dubai . Which world you live in . Did you know age of consent laws changed over the time to satisfy feminist revolutions !? . Just take example of India itself , marriage and consent at even at the age of 10 was very common just 70 years ago . Now let's discuss church as it comes under Vatican . The age of consent of Vatican was as low as 12 just two years ago and later amended due to again rapid feminist advancements in church . The canonical marriage age still kept at 14 . Now just imagine plight of this priest and elopement with the girl considering such low age of consent . It was legal and accepted.

Talking about developed countries , you pick any random European country it will have age of consent as 14 . See the point is about ' statutory rape ' and its applicability . Thousands of men and even minor boys are facing jail due to such biased laws . The feminists so far successful in changing consent laws in western and Asian countries like India . Even in Vatican POPE fell for the pressure tactics of feminists and raised it to 18 from 12 . But they failed miserably in Islamic countries as age of consent is kept at age of puberty . The marital exception still continues even today which sets age of consent as 15 for married girl. In other words priest can escape penal charges if he had marital relationship with girl .

Justice to the victim is very important issue here.
    1. As the victim is a minor whose faith trust made her to go to the church- Church has to bear the responsibility.
    2. It is the priest of the church ( holding that position) who has committed the crime - therefore the church also should shoulder in giving justice to the victim.
    3. When the priest is held guilty, the church should also pay compensation to the victim girl child.

    4. Paying compensation will set a good precedent within the church. Church hierarchy will be forced to take measure to "nip in the bud" the bad apples.

Of course my comments may not be agreeable for every one. But Justice to the girl child victim and her family for betrayal of trust is essential.
Media/ internet has its good uses. Let this be the case to set a such a precedent that ..never again these crimes occur in churches.

I commend Daijiworld for allowing this platform for fair and frank expression of our individual views and learn from others views.

This entire episode looks fishy and without any iota of doubt can be assumed as A consensus elopement of priest with minor . Though its debated as statutory rape under POCSO act but these act itself as very biased against male gender. There countless cases where a minor boy has been termed ' rapist' for a consensual activity with minor .

Had it been the incident took place in countries where age of consent is as low as 14 , priest would have a normal life with only immoral charges. A 15 year old grown up girl is not ' child' in any frigment of imagination , so the abuse of power
or corruption is out of context . Its just biased law came heavily against this innocent priest .

It is established that the wolves are now roaming in sheep's skin and fooling us innocent people. We have to educate and protect our children to the best that we can. Ask them questions and also support them and hear their side of the story always. I wish the mother had paid more attention to her daughter. I condemn all those who are attacking the victim (the girl) who at age 15 is just too young to defend herself. Instead why don't you go after the priest 41 years of age who should be standing for good and not evil.

    Wilma,

The priest may have counselled several disputing couples or erring youth in his priestly career because he is taught psychology, besides theology. Why could he not have used his expertise on this girls too and have deviated her from what is not right ? Doesn't this exhibit that he is actually a rouge, not a spiritually dedicated, sincere personality ? Taking advantage of a girl is fit for uncultured, ethic-less, low grade men's attitude - not that of a person who underwent training for over ten years ?

We common people dutifully confess to spiritually anointed representatives of God, of our sins. What trust will we hold while confessing next time if this is what a priest does behind closed doors ???? Sorry...

I do not agree the issue here about bringing Chastity.

    The issue is that :
    1. Behavioral changes noticed by school authorities - clear indicator of the child( 15 years) being under immense stress.
    2. This issue is about a crime , betrayal of trust and exploitation. If the priest had indulged in consensual relationship with an adult then the issue would have been about chastity which is not a crime but is of moral turpitude.

    3. I agree with the views that the person raising a voice against a priest better think twice as evident from the initial reaction of the church there- Denial. However the denial is also usually accompanied by strain in community life. But I am happy to learn that church has suspended the priest and this should set a precedent.

According to the BBC report- India has higher ( est?) number of children abused. Many of the incidences involving children go unreported in India.

Please read this BBC report : Why an MP wants India to talk about child sex abuse

Also point to be noted that, Kottapuram diocese initially dismissed the allegations against the priest. Instead they should have properly investigated the matter, however, they do not want to bring the disgrace to them, which is not in the right direction.

    - Do you think God does not know that many people are leading Priests to occasions of sin?

That is because if she tells about it, nobody will believe her, for, he is a personality of much adulation. Secondly the shame associated with it !

Nevertheless, haven't you read that the person fled twice, after the report being filed ?

True that she isn't a baby - she is 15 years old. But, by the time a priest is ordained, he crosses 25 years of age. Was he then a baby to decide what he wants ?

We are bashing the priest. Understood.
But we should also look at what exactly transpired between the two. How did this start. How come parents did not know anything.
Some of these priests are so sweet and smooth talkers that girls can easily fall prey.
The priests should draw a line when they interact with the girls/ladies and remember their social responsibilities. Now there is lot of socializing with the priests. In some churches the mass seems like an obligation while social gathering is the need.
We should stop believing the priests are super humans or near to God.
Hope this girl gets justice and hope other girls learn a lesson and be more careful of such monsters in disguise

    Essel,

That was happening when Christianity was just one head. After Protestants broke away several others too broke apart in to denominations. Its then that Catholic Church mellowed in its dictatorship.

With the number of atheists growing, the Church is slowly losing grip on its followers.

    Thats True.

In the west with the technological advancement and people getting educated, Christianity has lost its importance. How long you can hide the truth. Sexual urge is natural, in fact god's creation itself. We can not deceive it. It is the basic need, which has to be full filled. It is better to break the so called celibacy which will not work and give a chance for the priests to get married.

Foremost, I commend the parents to have taken the courage and filed a complaint with the police instead of going to the Bishop to settle the matter in a hushed-up manner.

Now, about the priest - When one takes oath to priesthood, he wows chastity that is refraining from sexual activity. If he wasn't sure about his bodily reaction towards the opposite gender and was convinced that he could not keep himself under control, why did he not give up priesthood ?

This man has committed double crime - one towards his profession and the other towards the social norms. He must be punished inn as much more counts as compared towards common rapists.

    - How many Christians pray for Priests and more vocations?

I have strong reservations about a person who violates a minor.

The issue here is not just controlling bodily urges.
This adult has multiple issues : including Power , deceit, Exploitation and betrayal.

If he has repeated this serious offence for 4 long months, he would have had ample opportunity from the first time to introspect. Repeated exploitation is indicative of premeditation and lack of conscience and hence a sociopaths behavior.

Swami's , Gurus, Religious men ( reported so far ) are all men and are products of the society. Therefore if a religious leader of a particular faith errs - it is not right to feel superior ( ah what do you expect... ). Organized religions are started and managed by men ( except in Anglican church there are women priests and Bishops).

I disagree with the Bias that all priests(gurus) have a tendency. There should be accountability . If an Indian Priest commits a crime in USA and is deported or flees back to India, Govt of USA will involve the GOI and will be extradited there to face justice.
Unless the allegations are proven - he should not be assigned duties involving pastoral responsibilities.

If he has so much urge, first of all he shouldn't have gone to become a priest or at least he should have left the priesthood and led a responsible married life!
Once opted to become a priest, he must discard all comforts of the world, should be loyal to priesthood, then only one can be a good priest for he committed himself to God!
Now he must be punished for the heinous act according to the law of the land, moreover for he is a priest!

@DON Free TV and internet are media. They cannot be blamed for a person's ill behaviour because that is a choice from within. Keep in mind that it is this free media that allows such cases to be heard and be reported and bring more light and awareness to situations as such. When this free media was not there God knows how many such victims were not heard from. We should be grateful that it is due to the spread of TV and Internet among the younger generations and their parents that they can be made aware and are can be less naive towards evil characters dressed in sheep skin.

1.Rape it self is a very serious crime deserving severe punishment.

    2. Rape/sexual abuse of a minor is even more dastardly act. As the adult knows that it is a crime, yet he repeatedly subjected the minor.

    3. Punishment to the most heinous crimes is severe and does not matter if the criminal is a priest. It is better he is away from the society for the rest of his life.

    4. Desire , anger and jealousy when mixed with troubled soul, one becomes a sociopath? I guess the reasoning power of right and wrong is switched off.

    5. The debate over - Is it the choice one makes in the profession we choose >( hence frustrated) or this person would not have abused a minor if there was no celibacy, will continue.
    6. What if there were married priests and yet there were few bad apples?

Personally I think- there are many who really believe there could be a priest and serve yet cannot because they do not want to lead a celibate life.
It is because of conservatives who want to maintain the tradition of celibacy. I do not see anything wrong for the priests to get married.
