Mangaluru: Auto fare revised - Minimum charge Rs 25

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 15: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, who also happens to be the chairman of regional transport authority, has passed orders enhancing minimum auto rickshaw fare in the city to Rs 25. This revision has taken effect from January 15.

The order passed in this connection states that the fare has been revised taking into account escalation in costs of fuel, spare parts, insurance etc and also in view of the prevailing prices of essential commodities in detail. However, the revision is subject to certain conditions.

Minimum fare for the first 1.5 km has been fixed at Rs 25 for a maximum of three passengers. For every km thereafter, meter fare would be Rs 13. Waiting charge for first 15 minute would be free, while for the next 45 minutes, 25 percent of the fare will have to be paid. Luggage charges would be free for the first 20 kg, whereas two rupees per kg for every additional 20 kg will have to be paid. For the period between 10 pm and 5 am, auto rickshaws can charge one and half times the fare calculated as above.

Driving licence details of the auto rickshaw driver with his photograph should be displayed behind the driver's seat in way that it is clearly visible to passengers. Auto rickshaws having licence to operate within the city can charge 1.5 times the above fare after crossing the city limits, the order mentions

In case of public complaints, the same may be filed either by calling toll free number 1077 or sending SMS to 9481802019. It is mandatory for all the auto rickshaws moving in the district to fix fare meter or digital fare meter. These meters should be got modified to display the new rates within 60 days.

This is a result of cartel between authorities and politicians and rickshaw unions. When there is absolutely no reason for increase in autofare, they have been raised. On the contrary, the fare should have gone down because of decreased oil price.
Mangalore is the costliest place in India because of irresponsible people having income from middle east not bothering about hardship of poor people in Mangalore.
Why are the politicians not bothered about this? They have all time and energy to go after Yettinahole and beef issues.
It is high time for common man to join hands and boycott autorickshaw. Let us show them our strength as well.

Mangaloreans, please don't complain too much. Your taxi/rickshaw prices are much better than the USA. Just to catch a taxi to the airport in my city costs 3250 Rs. Just to catch a local bus to a mall or work costs 235 Rs. Enjoy your low prices while you can.

Rs. 325/- is about USD$ 6/- which is as good as Rs.6/- as per American standard. In such case it is more expensive for a Sri Lankan or Nepalese living in the US. Whereas for a daily wage earner working in India Rs.25/- is still a big amount to him who hardly earns 4 USD per day.

    Dear Bhaskar

Do not compare USA with Mangalore. If at all you want to compare, then compare with the equal city in India itself.
Cost of living, salary structure, tax's, roads, rules & regulations, schooling, electricity & water bill, property tax ....are entirely different than USA.
Have you seen any auto guys charging as per miter. If its as per miter then they refused to travel.
Other end crude / fuel prices are slashing across the world and here MCC is allowing to increase the price. This shows government & MCC do not have any control on association belongs to auto.
Guys pls. try to avoid travelling by auto. Better boycott for few days.

the timing isn't proper. there is absolutely no justification to this increase when fuel and resultantly other prices show a downward turn. Even the govt. authorities seem tohas succumbed to the pressure from rickshaw drivers, like the passengers do. let the passengers chose other modes like ola and uber instead. The consumer forum should pressure the Govt. authorities to reverse this decision as well as arrange ola, uber and krstc /private buses to pick passengers directly from the airport. This is immediate need of the travelling public/ consumers. Will the DC give his attention to what the the consumers want.

Wrong timing. Petrol and diesel prices are not the only costs a driver or owner of an auto faces his living expenses have skyrocketed.
It is the same story world over. The taxi industry is a monopoly and efforts to break that monopoly by Uber, Ola and their equivalents get strong resistance from drivers and owners alike of the taxicabs, and even the town municipality backs the locals ignoring public interest. This is what is happening in Canadian cities like Toronto and Ottawa. These cities gave them the monopoly and based on it the owners have reaped big profits by selling licence plates.
In any case, Mangaluru and other Indian cities have a good and cheaper alternative, and hope that Uber and Ola will be allowed to pick up and off travellers at the airport.

Dear Readers I was in Mangalore before 3 days for one month. During that time all the time I used ola or uber cabs. Ola First 2 kms 49 rupees after that 10 rs per kilometer they will come to your door or if you are out on the road they will come where you want them to be( Same with uber) they will no refuse whether the road is good or bad. what ever your fare it will immediately come on your cell phone when you done. 4 people can ride with air condition. sure it is cheaper, safer than auto rickshaw's. Please down load the apps on your cell phone tell your friends who don't know. So every body can get better service for their money. Uber cost me 226 rupees from my house to air port (I paid 650 rupees all the time before for taxi)if you book they will come to your place maximum 10 minutes if they available. This kind of service is very popular in Mumbai & Bangalore. they don't available during night time in Mangalore because they don't get business'I think if lot people use this then this service is going to available for 24 hours in Mangalore also. People should put pressure on concerned authorities to allow them to pick passenger from Mangalore air port also. Please pass this message to every one who don't know about this service & help people to download the app ( who don't know to down load. This is smart move for future smart city

Besides heavy lowering of fuel prices even commodity prices like metals, rubber, etc. has drastically dropped down in the last few months due to heavy dumping from China!! The authorities agreeing to this bullying lobby is indeed unjustifiable and shocking!!

This increase is not new to the people but unjustified . Most of the Auto rickshaw drivers (baring few drivers) all other drivers were charging minimum fare of Rs 25/=even before this order is being implemented. When we ask for the balance, their simple answer is "NO CHANGE”. This is only a eye wash.
Besides Auto rickshaw driver's attitudes, behaviour is so horrible and their driving is incredible/reckless. No road sense or manner. Why this is happening because of lapse in the system by the authorities. Nobody is there to question them. Concerned authorities, departments are only to please them and protect their own chair. Total laxity.
Drivers are the kings on the road. They can ply their vehicles as per their whims and fancy. Such is the pathetic attitude of auto and two wheeler drivers. The reason cited for the increase is increase in price of the fuel and other accessories. But the price of the fuel is very low now. This difference can be adjusted against the cost of other items. For the middle class and poor people, there is no reason to increase or decrease but only to pay whatever they ask. Life of poor and middle class people is deteriorating day by day. For them no authorities, no departments to take decision but to notch out from their pocket, if they want to avail the facility of auto rickshaw.

MAY BE IMPACT OF HIKE IN NANDINI MILK PRICE. THE STATE GOVT. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITY TO LOOT.

Frequently the auto fare increases, but what about auto fare at the railway station? Why are the auto drivers at the railway station waiting at the end of Second Platform so ruthless? No proper auto stand they fall on people and demand the fare as they wish. Please have a prepaid auto even at the second platform
