Fashion among farmers to commit suicide, says BJP MP Gopal Shetty

Mumbai, Feb 18 (PTI): In controversial remarks, BJP MP Gopal Shetty has attributed farmers' suicides to a "fashion" and "trend" to end lives.

The remarks come at a time when Maharashtra is reeling under an agrarian crisis with 124 farmers committing suicide in the state since January this year.

"Not all farmers' suicides happen due to unemployment and starvation. A fashion is going on. A trend is on," Shetty, who represents north Mumbai, said after an event held in Borivili here yesterday.

"If Maharashtra government is giving five lakh rupees as compensation, then some other government in neighbouring state is giving seven lakh," he said."There's a competition in these people in giving money (compensation) to farmers," the first time MP said.

Condemning the comments, Congress said the "insensitive" remarks by Shetty show BJP's "insensitivity" towards farmers.

"At a time when Maharashtra is undergoing its worst-ever agrarian crisis, Shetty's remarks show how insensitive he and his party are towards thousands of farmers who have committed suicide due to debt and crop failure," MRCC president Sanjay Nirupam said.

Notably, the state government had two days back informed the Bombay High Court that 124 farmers have committed suicide in the state since January this year. The HC had asked the Centre what kind of assistance it provides to the state to deal with the grim agrarian crisis.

Observing that this was a serious issue, a bench headed by Justice Naresh Patil had asked the Additional Solicitor General to inform the High Court whether the Centre can chip in to provide schemes and financial help to the state to tide over the crisis.

Advocate General Srihari Aney had informed the bench that 124 farmers have taken their lives in the past one-and-half month, of whom 20 cases were reported from Osmanabad alone. The AG said factors such as crop failure due to scanty rainfall, meagre water supply for drinking and growing crops, insufficient capacity to repay loans and pressure from banks and money lenders were the causes that drove the farmers to commit suicide.

Such a statement making mockery of farmers’ plight was highly unexpected that too from a man hailing from the farming community. This first time MP won with the largest majority, mainly because of the support he got from all Mangaloreans (from Kundapur to Puttur) settled in North West Mumbai. Mangaloreans forgot their communities and parties while casting their votes. If you cannot think of any measures to redress the farmers’ grievances, at least don’t make a joke of their deaths.

Government should come up with one helpline number. If some farmer is serious about committing suicide then he should call that number. Government should give first priority to save his life and rehabilitating his family. I think many lives can be saved in that way. All the problems has solution.

Kindly do not make such cheap comments on the heartbreaking deaths of farmers who feed countrymen.

Farmer’s suicide is concerned, it may be the result of various factors including overburden loan procured & unable to repay, bank officials harassment for recovery, excess interest on procured unauthorized loan, poor crop return & unable to maintain family in spite of all hard work as a farmer, lack of policy and initiative of the government, frustration and no much bright hope as a farmer, even in few cases someone may have instigated to commit suicide, particularly the aged farmers of the family, so that the family members may get compensation money from the government etc.

Now the government shall act swiftly and that the farmers can avail loans by simplified single window approval methods & based the project report of bank officials and asset of the farmer applicant, It shall be disposed of within 7 days of submitting relevant documents.

In case of long pending unsettled loan and even after the bank loan tenure, the Bank may acquire the immovable assets of the farmers, In such cases, the banker cannot auction or sell the acquired farmer land for next 15 years or more and further no interest will be levied on the procured loan amount, however the farmer will have the right to cultivate the land for next 15 years & more and repay the outstanding debts. If the farmer successfully pays the earlier outstanding then the acquired land shall revert back to the farmer and farmer can have peaceful life. I hope this could be one of the solution stop for farmer’s suicide.

Nobody should forget that we eat our meal because of these farmers. Farmers are as important as our soldiers on the border, because of whom we sleep in peace.

Then, why farmers and their families are not at par with that of the soldiers ? Why aren't farmers' children not studying in best schools, get adequate health support ?

Well, this is because there isn't a fixed income to farmers, their income depends on rains, irrigation facilities and weather pattern. Then, adopt rain water harvest, collect run-away water in elevated tanks to supply the land in lean time ?

There is one more issue - finance. The farmers feast on harvest but starve in rainy season ? Why ? Because they know no method of saving for rainy season. Well, taking loans should not be a solution. There should be a system of spreading just as far as your sheet permits, not borrow to cover you. Do not borrow to conduct marriage your children - do it in as simple manner as you can - money spent on extravaganza does not come back !

The government must make a policy of repaying the loan of a farmer who committed suicide, than giving cash to the survivors. This enticement of getting finance upon one's death, drives the head of the family to death. Politics should not be played with a grieving family. Never ! We should have learnt a lesson from so many deaths already !

Going by your argument, poorest of the people, a Chaiwala, came to power as a PM. How come his worth rose from 1.51 crore in April 2014 to 3.61 crore in 2015 ?

Whether he fancies watches, sunglasses or shoes is his prerogative. Let the CM Karnataka give accounts of his assets - why are you singling him out ?

As I said before, bringing politics in matters as sensitive as farmers' suicide, will cost us a broth on our plate. Refrain from it and employ adequate repairs if you want to continue to be self reliant on grains, not abandon fertile land and go international for your needs !

in case of Prime minister the value of land should be unchanged???

When you say his worth rose from 1.51 crore in April 2014 to 3.61 crore in 2015 does this include the immovable property (land/house) which he owns in Gandhi Nagar Gujarat.

If yes then hope you got the answer on How his wealth rose

Even if you have a land/house in Kadri then even your wealth will rise year on year does this mean you are corrupt or you are into illegal activities.

    Guru,

Shouldn't the receiver of your pears of wisdom have been Jeevan instead of me ? If it can apply to NaMo and me, so it can to Siddu too - can't it ? Then, its foolish to compare the worth (Watch, Sunglasses, Shoes) with a farmer, whose land is not for sale. Therefore he does not care what its worth is but yearns for yield out of it season after season.

The government that did nothing for the farmer in your opinion is aside now, the man promised 'Achche Din' is at the helm. Now don't tell that me he in Delhi, Karnataka is under Congress - 'Achche Din' weren't for Delhiites alone - were it ?

Some extent Mr. Shetty is correct, farmers also wants everything free. They get loans from many banks and organization with low interest, when the time of repay they suffer. The loan they are taking from banks are misusing somewhere and at the end nothing in their hand then there is easy way is suicide. Banks should give the loans to farmers on the progress of the work instead giving once lumsum amount.
