Mangalore, Sep 18: The Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Bethany Educational Society (BES) was inaugurated by the superior general and president of the Society Sr Jyothi at St Sebastian’s Platinum Jubilee hall, here on Monday September. 17. She also released the diamond jubilee logo of the society on the occasion.

Principal of social works at Roshni Nilaya, Dr Jancinta D’Souza who was the chief guest, while addressing the gathering informed that the congregation has contributed greatly to the growth of a healthy, vibrant, just and humane society by empowering the marginalised and rural masses, especially women. The best ways to celebrate a diamond jubilee is to inspire young teachers to educate a child from the remote locations of India, who is less fortunate, she added.

Fr Raymond Mascarenhas started the Bethany Sisters Congregation in 1921, whose first members were the teachers of St Sebastian’s School at Bendoor in the city. It was registered as a society in 1948. Since then the Bethany educational society has provided selfless service to more than 14 states in India, Europe and now Africa too.

Speaking on the topic ‘Education for Excellence’, senior counselor of the Confederation of India Industry, Institute of Quality (CIIIQ), Dr Senthil Kumar, talked about the one and half year long relationship between the CIIIQ and the BES and appreciated the congregation for their commitment, competitiveness, co-existence and confidence.

The president of the All India Catholic Association of Schools Sr Ann Teresa also earlier spoke on the topic ‘Education for Peace’.

Secretary of BES Sr Joy, vice-president Sr Wilberta, deputy secretary Sr Jeevan, principal of District Institute of Education trainer Philomena Lobo, parish priest of Bendoor Fr Peter Noronha were present on this occasion.

A variety of entertainment programmes were presented by students of educational institutions under the Bethany Educational Society later.

Thanks to the Daijiworld for sharing with us the joyous occasion of Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Bethany nuns. What a great honour to know that the Bethany sisters are flourishing so well with their Educational endeavours in Mangalore and many other states.

My educational foundation began thru the blessings of the Bethany nuns while my dear wife is proud of her St. Agnes College. I received my First Holy Communion at Bendoor, and I still remember the borrowed canvas shoes that were so tight and caused blisters! I still vividly remember my first three glorious years of education at the Kankanady school under the leadership of Sister Lazarus.

I also remember "Monthy teacher" and her loving care and guidance. Few years ago, when I visited Mangalore during August, I had the honour to hoist the flag at the school for Independance Day, and I was so proud to march with the school band from the main road, and also spoke little bit in Kannada. The school uniform that I witness in the photographs is colourful indeed.

The Bethany nuns in their shining sarees look majestic. Sister Jacinta D'Souza, the Guest of Honour, is as dynamic as I have observed her at all times. Everyone has something to offer for the good of the community. Kankanady is the little community that we were raised and educated. Bethany was our starting point where we were given the initial keys of intellectual success to our life of peace and harmony.

Thank you Sister Lazarus and all the Bethany congregation. I shall visit you next time when in Mangalore and let us celebrate our Diamond Jubilee once again. I want the school band in display, and I want the children to sing and dance. Qudha Afeiz.
