Mangaluru, Mar 8: Renowned film director and three-time National Award winner B S Lingadevaru on Tuesday March 8 inaugurated the two-day national-level media fest 'Beacons 2016' organized by Nitte Institute of Communication at its Panir campus in Deralakatte.

Addressing the gathering, Lingadevaru said, "Like Hollywood, film circuits should be started in India to encourage youngsters besides providing entertainment through films.

"Today, the educational sytem works like a factory. Those who get educated do not obtain general knowledge and remain confined to certain sectors. Media and films have the power to influence human behaviour. There are several colleges for the study of films. However there are no colleges to conduct classical study of films.

"Films that should have been an art form have transformed into a fashion. Knives, hatchets, love, fight for the lover have become films for students. Instead of sparking creative thinking, the three-hour long movies have become a headache. Those who create art movies are leading difficult lives. The government should bring a policy for producing art films in universities. The government should encourage those who produce art films," he said.

"Students must develop social responsibility within them which can help society to grow. As education is commercialized, we find students working hard only to make a good fortune. It is the responsibility of the educational institutions to provide a platform to bring out their talents and promote their skills," he added.

The fest which aims at being a platform for students in bringing out their talents began with the screening of award winning movie 'Naanu Avanalla Avalu', followed by a discussion and debate on the same.

Mass communication HoD Prof Raviraj Kini welcomed the gathering. Leora D'Cunha and Neil Venkatesh compered the programme. Student Rithika gave information on film ‘Nanu Avanalla Avalu’. Deekshitha Prashanth proposed vote of thanks.

A total of 115 students from 13 different colleges participated in the media festival

Spot Photography, Movie Spoof, Creative Writing, Product Launch, Radio Jockeying, Just a Minute, Stand-up Comedy and Poster Making were a few of the events held on the first day.
