Bengaluru: 'Widespread intolerance, attacks on religious institutions a challenge': CBCI

Bengaluru, Mar 9 (PTI): The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, the apex body of the Catholic church, today said widespread intolerance and attacks on religious personnel and institutions were present-day challenges in the country.

In the "final statement" at the eight-day 32nd CBCI plenary here which concluded today, the Conference also identified large-scale poverty and growing gap between rich and poor, corruption, illiteracy, child labour, increasing unemployment, growing addiction to alcohol and drugs and denial of SC status to Christian Dalits as other challenges.

The Bishops noted that the multiple, composite culture of the country has noble values of religiosity, peace, simplicity and tolerance as lived by Mahatma Gandhi and various Indian sages.

The CBCI holds the Plenary Assembly once in two years to discuss various aspects of life of the Church in India, especially the challenges faced by it.

About 180 Bishops from all the Dioceses of the country deliberated on the principal theme of the plenary 'The Response of the Church in India to the Present Day Challenges'.

The Conference also identified some of the challenges within the church such as declining family values, tensions and break ups in families, an increasing number of divorces, abortions and a lack of understanding of marriage as a sacrament, growing materialism, consumerism and addiction to social media, growing indifference and lack of commitment to the Christian vocation, the CBCI said in a statement.

The Bishops chose for review and for an appropriate response areas such as regular visits of Parish Priests to the families, accepting the dignity, role and importance of the lay faithful in the Church.

Other areas included fostering advocacy to address the issues of land alienation and human trafficking, promoting youth apostolate, providing educational opportunities, especially to the socially backward and girl children, drawing up an Environmental (Green) Policy, shunning excessive institutionalization, clericalism and extravaganza.

The concluding Holy Mass was presided over by the CBCI President, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, who exhorted the Bishops to diligently put into practice the recommendations and suggestions that came up in the plenary in their respective dioceses.

Joseph Stalin was a Russian Orthodox seminary student and he couldn't abide with the strict Seminary ethical standards, he wanted to drink thus he was kicked off from the seminary.

He became very anti-social and anti Christian killed millions, including his own wife and the wife of Lenin.

Was he a Christian simply with a Christian first name Joseph?

    Anp Sir:

A few people like you are now acting like the official representatives of the BJP-RSS-VHP etc.

For a hungry person, one plate full of food is his or her God.

BJP came into power through economic promises of prosperity, but now fully concentrated in a cultural transformation using the Hindu religion thus pushing India backward to a stone age culture.

In the recent population survey, the percentage of Hindus is 79%.
Out of that 70% is totally fed up with the march of the nation under the Gujarati Nazism.

Do you think that the Patels and Jats are non-Hindus, no they are 99% Hindus.

Do you think that the people voted in New Delhi-Bihar-U.P. etc are non-Hindus? No, the greatest percentage of the electorate among them are Hindus. The hidden agenda and idea of BJP to play with the religious card will not work, but it will backfire very severely, simply wait.

What about the political leaders of the non-BJP parties? They are 99% Hindus except Mizoram and Nagaland.

In my retirement age, I am spending hours to read news papers from many parts of the world. The GCC country's news papers have taken a very cold attitude towards the BJP Government, which is an indirect display of the attitude of the respective Governments.
Do you think that the statements of the Assam Governor and the BJP M.P. from Karnataka are not read by the Muslim people of the world?

Leading News papers in the U.S. like New York Times, Los Angles Times, Christian Science Monitor, CNN etc are writing what is going on in India in the religious intolerance meter.

Simply wait for the next election somewhere in India, then only your eyes will catch the reality of the performance of the heaven promised BJP which has indeed planted too much social disorder in India already.

Some one below mentions Adolf Hitler as christian.
Who is a true christian? what qualities one should practice to be a true christian?

It may seem ironical and politically incorrect to say so, nevertheless I will say it. The word communism is seen very negatively these days.We had soviet Union and the cold war that made the corporate USA demonize the word.

If you go deep down into the teachings of Christ : sharing, fairness, tolerance, forgiveness , community( communal) distribution of wealth was prominent, so was the service to the poor and down trodden.

Many of these teaching go against the human nature of self preservation, hoarding, not sharing, selfish motives, jealousy and prejudice and casteism/racism( yes its part of human nature).

We do not need the barometer of the western christians to define christianity here in India nor can we take bad apples like Hitler to define christianity. It is what we practice within ( and so should be the purpose of all faiths).

More conversion more peace better society and less crime. It is high time where people want a change in their life from hate and crime corruption rapes and many things. It only happens through conversion in beliefs better education right and just ways of living that us only through conversion process. One has to convert from bad to good to revolve the changes to life family and society. Through Christians education many people have one of best education and best peaceful life where no one can provide such a gift of life. God bless Christians and it's priest and nuns for their sacrifice of life to offer better education and transformation of society

Caste system is being re-invented. Religion has become the new caste system to discriminate - a point open for debate.

Human as we are , no one is exempt from prejudices and biases. Collective dialogue and understanding differences allow us to accept each others divergent views and respect them without necessarily agreeing to them.

The same prejudice ( deep instincts) can also be exploited to incite hatred to our fellow human beings. What I see here is a parallel to what did happen in Rwanda.

As Indians our efforts, labor and thinking and most importantly time should be spent on doing constructive things. We are wasting time fighting with each other, spreading rumors, hate and intolerance.

It is not without reason that educated, middle to rich Germans began to show prejudice against Jews( compare to minorities in India). Systematic incitement by right wing party did the trick. Therefore what we learn from this is that no country is immune no religion is immune no human being are immune from getting enmeshed in hate.

If a Dalit want to convert to Buddhism let him convert. If a muslim want to covert wants to be a buddhist he too can if he or she has a freedom to do so. If a hindu wants to be a christian - who has the power to prevent?

religion of the dalit does not change his status as a Dalit. It is a very myopic thought that it does and does not have merit.

All religions were created by men. Christianity has had its share of trouble and has evolved over the time. giving examples from the past in this present times does not make a good argument.

Education and economic upliftment of dalits and tribal people - is the key issue here. Not conversion.
    Conversion is an excuse.

Our typical caste-ist mindset does not accept the up liftment of dalits. So it finds causes to oppose. If education and social upliftment of these down trodden people is allowed ( who needs then to be converted?).

In Gujarat money lenders( exploitative - lets not be ignorant here on the existence of these arm twisting money lenders who are modern day slave masters) do not want the downtrodden away from their clutches. Just like in Pakistan blasphemy law was used to persecute and kill and then grab their property of minorities, these money lenders of Gujarat with their buddies systematically use conversion and other tactics to maintain control. We the people who read dailies really need to understand there are different versions of realities other than those coming from Udupi.

Which version do we want to believe with respect to JNU- determines the views we express here. We are in a way hypocrites that do not practice equality and fairness. Our politicians are corrupt, we have tolerance for sucking upto government officials just to do their duty. We are not worried about Vyapam. We are more worried about people who were dying of hunger - converting. Ashoka the great did not succeed in converting Hindu majority to Buddhism.

Do we honestly belief the rhetoric that some missionaries are capable of making India Christian? what does the census say?

Sine BJP came into power, attacks against the minorities and Dalits have greatly increased. Maharastra
    209/ Karnataka 184/M.P. 159/ Rajastan 140/Bihar 139/Gujarat 131,
and Kerala had nothing in the list of January 2016, also in the list of attacks against minorities, the State of Kerala was at the bottom level.
100% literacy of Kerala and the old tradition of religious tolerance praised by the politicians of all parties another proof about the reasons of old time human butchery due to illiteracy and religious fanaticism.

    2014 644 attaks
2015 751 In the month of January alone, nationwide 59 attacks are reported.

Since the 1980s, this "Aryan Invasion" hypothesis has been strongly challenged as a myth propagated by colonial scholars who sought to reinforce the idea that anything valuable in India must have come from elsewhere. Critics of the hypothesis note that there is lack of evidence of any conquest, among other historical and archaeological problems. One alternative hypothesis is explained by Encyclopedia Britannica as follows:

    Mathew,

Hitler was a christian. He was never against christians. Check quote below,

''My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded only by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison. To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before in the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice.... And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people.... When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom to-day this poor people is plundered and exploited.
