Mangaluru, Mar 14: Environment activists under the banner of National Environment Care Federation on Monday March 14 organized a unique protest at Kadri Park against the alleged illegal chopping of several trees for the construction of the proposed musical fountain at the old deer park.

The protestors took a round of the park beating drums and sounding bells and sirens to create awareness. Some of them even climbed trees.

Addressing the protest, Shashidhar Shetty, secretary of NECF said, "Several trees have been chopped down without seeking permission of the forest department. People come here to breathe fresh air, and there are animals like peacock and birds here. Now the park is being turned into a musical fountain and all ministers and MLAs are involved in it. We will aso challenge this in the court.

"This is not development, but just a way to loot the people. There is a contract mafia and officers involved in this. If a person has to buy oxygen, he will require Rs two lac per annum, but these trees are giving free oxygen.

"We do not want this musical fountain. We do not want this kind of development. There is no sufficient drinking water either. The ministers and MLAs are involved in the Yettinahole project also which is against the nature," he added.

"This Environment Day on June 5, we will celebrate Vanamahotsava here and plant trees. Now, more than 50 trees have been chopped down using machines and setting them on fire," he said.

Activist Dinesh Holla slamming forest minister B Ramanath Rai said, "Rs 13,000 crore has been spent on harming nature with Yettinahole project, and Rs 7 crore is being spent on harming the environment with this musical fountain. Upon that you (Rai) claim that you are protectng the environment. What is it that you are protecting?

"This was the only park for the people of the city. All other parks are in a dilapidated condition," he added.

Kateel Dinesh Pai said, "More than 50 trees have been cut down. We will file criminal case against this. In one year more than 400 trees have been cut down in the city in the name of development. MLA J R Lobo should take responsibility for this."

Range forest officer Sridhar said, "The gorticuture department has handed this park over to MUDA, which has not obtained permission to cut down trees. Seventeen trees were cut down, out of which four were set afire.
We will file a case against the contractor and MUDA executive engineer who executed the work of cutting the trees without permission."

freedom. Monkeys are at their best when socializing. Enjoy themselves and entertain the viewers too.
By the way any complains in Mumbai?
The Cosmopolitan City would have been still a jungle if there were protests and Authorities had obliged. The city is still expanding.

It was actually beautiful when the deer park was around Kadri Hills. It was a pity that it was shifted to Pilikula.....a far away place from the city. Now imagine the amount of tax payers money is spent to entertain the citizens and beautify the area. Each new local politician has his own new plans trying to out beat the previous one. Competition at our cost. God please help us.

Trees are biggest polluters in Mangalore.

Surprised? Yes its true. Just watch every morning burning of fallen leaves. More trees- more smoke- more pollution.

Why do we need trees anyway?

My comments were to drive home the point: it is not enough to hug the trees.
Our education has failed us because we do not comprehend the carbon dioxide( green house gas)reducing potential of trees.

What have we done to - put a stop to the road side burning of leaves - NOTHING !!
We organize - health Melas, organic melas. yet the biggest air polluter issue we allow this practice.

Therefore why do we need trees anyway?

Musical Fountain! Shashidar Shetty should file class action suit in court to stop this project and ask Lokayukta to investigate financial dealings related to ADB Loans.
Roads are miserable to drive and walk. It would be nicer if MLA sponsors a burial ground for the dead due to Bad Roads, along with Musical Fountain. It is high time for NGO's to file a complaint with Lokayukta to keep an eye on ADB Loans. ADB loans did not finish Sewer System but we tax payers are already paying back the loans. Bendoor Mallikatta Corruption Road still not finished. Bejai Market is still not finished. Everyhere and there half done roads but got money for Musical Fountain. Already 29 lacs spent on gate. That gate proves that there is corruption. Now Musical Fountain to swindle. Few Big Banners will be mounted around the Park so special interest group will milk the public

Jobless People. Do some productive Work for the safeguard of your family. This type of protest is not worthy. Instead educate people of green revolution which is more productive. Take some steps to plant more trees rather than question the government, which in turn is of no use which takes year altogether to take some good decision.

Advise the builders. Does any one has guts. Try if you can and simply do not lecture others.

any one who is supports development in the name of cutting trees, I have a question. if the Govt asks for one or two cents of land on the main road for road widening, how many of us will happily agree? The people who are talking about development would be the first ones to reject the govt offer.

World over there are such amusements/water fountain are provided for public relaxation and soothing human mind and heart. We cannot think anything and everything from negative point of view. For any shortfall or problem there is a solution provided we try to solve them. Only crying and making controversies will not solve any problems.

for what they are protesting is really a drama. If someone see this park then surely protesters will be trashed away as all the trees have died and they are totally dry.

Park doesn't look as park in reality renovation and development is really necessary here. And let this protesters undertake its responsibility by watering the garden and plants.

brother both districts are related to one another and I dint said in my comment that to harm nature just read it properly.

Dont create nonsense by dividing twin districts we Udupi people if we go out of country or state and someone ask were are you from then our first reply is from India then if we say its Karnataka - Manglaore later if someone knows properly about all the places we use to say udupi.

Now days people like you are dividing udupi mangalore. And take care of your Mangalore other ways day is to far it will be full of keralites there and maybe you will search place in udupi to settle. This will be my last comment related to your city as you are owing it Mangalore.

Thanks for reminding that am from Udupi and Udupi itself who can not even comment on Mangalore. Am Proud to be from Udupi and your hatred I will remember in my life thanks.

How many sky scrapers, shopping malls and residential complexes have come up throughout Mangalore and half of the greenery/trees have been chopped off to develop what Mangalore is today. Why all these activists have been sitting and watching instead of making big noise and show off business.
Let them complete the project but also ensure that new saplings (which grow rapidly) are planted
to make environment green in the days to come.
Whereas concrete jungle is mushrooming without bearing in mind how to replace the lost greenery.
    Any answers?

There were plenty of protests against the trees cut from Father Mullers through Valancia and beyond. Mangaloreans love concrete, we think it means development. We love 12,000 empty flats and high rent prices, we love this March feeling like its May, we love sitting in traffic jams. This is development. We're so proud to be developed, what wonderful developed people we are!

why is development not happening with roads, 24 hr water supply, continuous power supply and public places like govt hospitals, govt offices. there is so much to do before getting on to cutting trees and building fountains.let us live in a clean hygiene atmosphere before doing this. If you remember, the Kuwaiti govt had plans to demolish the main cathedral to build fly overs, but they had a good heart and with the intervention of our Bishop the highways were built without touching the church building.Similarly, there are enough places in the park to build a fountain and they can do it without cutting trees.

People in those years thought of their future generations and planted these trees. Most of them are still living in Mangalore today. But some unscrupulous elements like today's govt. officials have become so greedy they resort to this kind of destruction just for money and fame. They simply misuse power. JR Lobo should look into this. I'm sure he understands the sentiments of the common people.
