Assembly speaker comes down on river disputes tribunal, state govt

Daijiworld Media Network - Gadag (SP)

Gadag, Mar 17: Karnataka assembly speaker, Kagodu Timmappa, who took note of the fact that people are craving for drinking water, criticized the lethargic functioning style of the tribunal set up to settle inter-state water disputes. He urged Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to intervene in the matter and see that people get enough water.

At one point, he asked minister, Mahadevappa, as to whether the chief minister fulfilled his promise of providing water to everyone in the state. He also advised the concerned to release enough grants to manage drought situation in the state and to make sure that no one is left thirsty.

Speaking at a programme organized here to celebrate 50th birthday of minister, K H Patil, here on Wednesday, Kagodu criticized the river water tribunals for inefficient functioning. He noted that these tribunals, which have been functioning since the last over two decades, have failed to provide any relief to the concerned because of their own inertia.

He asserted that tribunals should not beome centres of rehabilitation for retired judges. Informing people that he had discussed the issue of connecting Kalasa Bhanduri and Mahadayi rivers with Dr Rajendra Singh, he called upon people to show solidarity towards getting their share in the water. He suggested for convening an all party meeting to arrive at a consensus on this issue. Noing that dragging unwarranted controversies does not bode well for the people of the state, he wanted the Prime Minister to personally take interest in the matter and settle the issue.
