Mangaluru: Puttur temple invitation controversy arising out of intolerance: DC

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 18: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, asserted that no rules, regulations, or legal provisions had been violated in printing invitation to the annual car festival of Lord Mahalingeshwara temple Puttur with his name and designation therein. He opined that this controversy, which was unexpected, has arisen out of intolerance.

Replying to questions raised by media persons at his office here on Thursday March 18, Ibrahim said that Hindu Religious Endowments Act bars non-Hiindus from taking part in religious worship procedures, but it does not bar inclusion of names of non-Hindus in the invitations relating to religious programmes.

"We have conveyed this information to Puttur MLA, who has now been convinced about the provisions. All concerned aspects have been looked into. If anyone specifically points out mistakes or lapses under any laws or rules, we are open to correct them," he clarified.

Ibrahim explained that in his capacity as special officer at Mysuru, he had taken part in several Dasara-related programmes there for three years, adding that during the last two years, he had convened over 25 meetings concerning safety, monitoring, and other issues relating to temples in the district, and had taken several steps in this direction. He also revealed that another meeting is being convened on Friday on the issue of recent developments at Kollur temple.

"As and when deemed suitable, I have taken part in puja programmes and accepted Prasadam offered to me. It is improper for anyone to raise questions about the propriety of doing so," he said in reply to a question. He said that higher officials and home department have been kept abreast of the threat given to give call for Puttur bandh.

The DC observed that history of Tulunadu evidences long and harmonious relationship between Hindus and Muslims, giving examples of Bappa Beary's association with Bappanadu temple at Mulky and Ali Chamundi shrine at Kumble. He felt that one should always try to cement relationships rather than creating fissures. He said that his name has appeared in the temple invitation because of his current designation as the deputy commissioner of the district, duly clarifying that his permission had not been sought before doing so.

"I have been hurt by this controversy. However, being the DC of the district, it is my responsibility to bring people together. I have been discharging this duty diligently," he stated.

A hindu should not discriminate other religious people participating in Hindu festivals when their intentions are good. All creation and living beings are Gods creation and a Hindu prays for the well being of entire creation in Universe. 'Lokaa Samasthaa sukino bhavantu'(may all living beings in the universe be happy!). When that being greatness of Hindu philosophy, it is in bad taste to oppose silly things like this. Further we must whole heatedly appreciate respected D.C. Mr.A.B Ibrahims for his generosity in his involvement and helping nature in conducting the festival smoothly as stated by him.

I don't understand the sick mentality of people despite so much hue and cry in recent days about intolerance. Why can't any community differentiate between good and bad people rather than on religion. What is the big deal in inviting some one of Muslim faith for a Hindu festival or vice versa. All communities should realize this and move on. Please stop it here so that the next generation will not follow this otherwise there won't be growth of regions when there is hatred.

pseudo religious and pseudo patriotic BJP Sanghees should realize that a state civil servant is doing his job irrespective of his religion.

VHP-BJP-RSS have failed in administration and managing the economy and hence are diverting attention to all such trivial topics.

All are happening because of dirty politics. Use commonsense & since these all are of religious matters we should not hurt anyone's beliefs. It’s observed that some persons are commenting like a politician & not on reality. My question is, since this festival is of particular religion why government is interfering in it. While taking any decisions it should consider opinions of devotees also. If everything is considered on Governance & laws will they ready to accept the same thing for other religions?
    1. Is government is ready to impose same law on other minority?
    2. Are they ready to follow the same law on their religious beliefs?
Hence, since it’s of particular religion government should consider beliefs & opinions of same region & not of others. Since the day one this government is attacking particular religion & acting like the agent of others. Now they have made this political matter & soon they will blame BJP & some other groups. “Creating themselves & blaming on others”
People should come out & support General public on their views & not on such political parties/Government.

This is nothing but petty politics played by some politicians to gain some support. When the D.C. is sitting on that chair, he is neither a Muslim nor a Hindu or a Christian. He is just a civil servant irrespective of which religion he belongs to. Stop fanning the fires of hatred, you bloody politicians. Allow the people to live in peace. If you cannot do that, just get the hell out of here. People of this region have lived in peace and harmony all these years, for God's sake, do not set them one against the other. No God will like this.

We should not make mountain of a mole in these kind of issues. People who are raising objection and the DC should stop talking about this issue frequently. Whatever required as per law or rules and in the best interest of society we should proceed. My opinion is as a representative of Government the person in charge has to discharge his functions as required by law and rules whether it is Temple, Church or Mosque. That person should not be seen in religious color but only as a representative of Government.Having said that customs of that Mosque, Church or Temple has to be honoured.

DC sir, hope you know the Muzurai policy of government of Karnataka when it comes to Hindu Temples.

"If the government official is from other religion then that person name will not be published in invitation card, nor he will be invited to the religious function, at this time the government official should nominate another government official for this purpose"

Puttur temple invitation controversy is nothing but foolish act with some vested interest in it by some political party for their personal mileage and glory.I do agree with the clarification given by our sincere and gentleman DC Everybody knows that there is nothing wrong in printing DC's name in the Puttur temple's invitation. Some people though they have become old and matured, their mind is not matured yet.Ridiculous.Uncultured people doing, creating all these problems and disturbing peace and harmony just for their personal mileage and for their selfish attitude.Egoist.

There is so much sentimental blackmailing.
The DK temple have always a different view.
    We must respect their views.
They should also respect views of other religions in the district.
They should also respect demands of other religions be it be evening mass or midnight mass.
The religious freedom should not be caged inn only for one religion.

It would be best if the DC does not make political statements. Why add fuel to the fire ?

We all know the DC is right. Shakunthala Shetty ( ex BJP ) is playing immature / silly politics to gain petty support from some uneducated supporters in Puttur. The said Temple is on Govt. land and that's the reason why the DC has to be invited. May be Shakunthala Shetty is unaware of it.
