About Catholic Caterers Association

Food has been an integral part of any celebration at present. Good food is what completes the event. And this is where caterers come in and take responsibility to see that everyone is happy at the end of the programme.

With every business, new challenges come up along with the rewards. The catering industry also faces similar challenges with regard to labour problems, maintaining high standards, government taxes and competition.

With these issues in mind, Alwyn Pinto, proprietor of Aroma Caterers came up with the idea of forming Catholic Caterers Association which will help in solving problems faced by the caterers. In July 2015, he invited all the caterers of the region to Woodlands Hotel and thus began the Catholic Caterers association.

After receiving tremendous response from caterers of Moodbidri, Puttur, Vittal, many more caterers joined the association and in the following meetings leaders were elected to give direction to the association.

Alwyn Pinto of Aroma Caterers was elected the president, Divya D’Souza of MDSouza Caterers, the secretary and Ivan D'Souza of Aaron caterers, the treasurer of the association.

The association provides a platform to discuss issues related to catering. The members also give their expert solutions to problems faced by caterers. The caterers find solutions to their problems through feedback from their fellow caterers. The association also helps in obtaining food license, FSSAI certificate, service and income tax etc. The organization also helps caterers on food and hygiene practices along with appropriate waste management through workshops.

The primary concern of the association is to raise the standard of food quality and obtain business partnership from the Catholic community. In spite of the fact that there are more than 100 caterers in Dakshina Kannada, it is disheartening to see people from Catholic community giving orders to caterers outside the community. The Association has many plans to strengthen this group of entrepreneurs by improving fellowship and relations within and working together to not only upgrade themselves in terms of standards and professionalism, but more importantly, work together for the betterment of the community.

The association has already begun its charity work by giving their collective contribution of Rs 43,000 to Infant Mary School, Jeppu for its school day celebrations.

They plan to contribute to the betterment of the downtrodden and needy in various parts of the district.

Pioneers of catering industry, the late John D'Souza , founder of MDSouza & Sons, Caterers & Bakers, and Thomas Pinto from Bajpe, popularly known as Thomas Cook will be felicitated on the occasion.

Surprising that it may be the Chief Guests are those who have patronised non catholic caterers. One of the Chief Guests has consistently maintained that Catholic Caterers Shouldn't be Supported also Catholic Businessmen Shouldn't be patronised! though his brother is a catholic Businessman

As long as the intention is good, it is a good move. But most of these so called Associations work against public interest. People are warned against following ill practices:
    1. Cartel among caterers to overcharge customers thinking that people are ready to spend any amount for wedding because it is once in life time achievement.

    2. Trying to restrict the food quantity by not allowing guest to do self service. Some time the caterers provide very small spoon for main items so that one serves lesser quantity for himself.

    3. Serving only gravy instead of meat pieces saying that the meat got finished by earlier guests.

    4. Serving pork full of fat so that people do not take normal portion.

    5. Intentionally instructing the servers to delay serving snacks for drinks to that consumption reduces.

    6. Irresponsible way of serving leaving few rows unserved assuming that the guests will be decent enough not to ask for service and pretending to have forgotten to serve.

    7. Hiding and robbing drinks supplied by host party. For expert guidance on this, contact JO JO CATERERS. The manager himself is involved in such case.

    8. Hiding and taking away extra food left over, for which the host party is charged.

    9. using dirty crockery without washing.

All these ideas come under organised way of taking the host party for a ride.
Public is requested to safe guard against this.
The noble profession of catering in Mangalore started by Stalwarts like Thomas cook is no more a noble profession because of unscrupulous new comers.

One of the most important things the association should do is to train the catering employees in etiquette, hygiene and good attitudes towards the guests. Do not hire people from the street who steal bottles of liquor and then argue with the host in drunken state. It took a tough guy to search and recover stolen liquor bottles from one of the functions I have attended recently. Because the hosts do not want to spoil the mood on the auspicious day, they normally let it go.

If possible, the association should train and issue the employees diploma in catering. All catering employees should display their ID during the service.

Association can also introduce opinion survey and rank the caterers accordingly so that the host will have a option to choose from the ratings.

Catering is a thriving business and it is going the stay. If the trust is not developed within the community, don't blame the community for taking their business to next door.

Good initiative, but may end up as another non starter, simply because each of these caterers back stab each other, outsource not only their staff but their dishes too, and the food dished out is just pathetic. It is common knowledge that in most Mangalorean functions the focus is on "the bar" and food just gets dumped, the better food is by one of the Konkana caterers, even at Mangalorean catholic weddings,, on a personal note, I avoid the Non veg dishes by our catholic caterers, all we have is decayed meat diced with masala.

I wish we had a few authentic North Indian caterers, fed up of same old fare ..

As the objective of the Association is to be a self regulatory body for catering and ensure high standards of Quality of food and Service,it is a welcome development and we Wish them great success. We invite not only relatives but also friends for social occasions and serve both Non-veg as well as Vegetarian food. It is time for collaboration with Quality Vegetarian Caterers irrespective of which community they belong to as That would be mutually beneficial.

It will ease the tension for the general public. You should also tie up with other Caterers which will be of mutual interest as the problems faced by the Caterers are common. You would also benefit from their expertise.
It will also be good, if you do not insist on minimum crowd of 400 as many are forced to go for this number due to the cheaper rates promised. Please consider genuine discount to the people who can not afford lavish spending.
