Mumbai, Oct 2: The virtue of respecting the elders has been embodied in Indian culture. The new generation is expected to follow this renowned culture.  This has been in practice in India only, which has set the trend for other nations to follow.  It’s the duty of every Indian to take care of the elderly.  Their guidance, blessings and graces can bring bliss to our life.  We have learned to respect the agile elders who have given their best at the prime of their youth.  Moreover the significance should be given to serve the elderly from the families of below poverty level.  Their pensions awarded by Union government would be deposited directly to their accounts maintained in the banks or post offices.  Non Government Organisations (NGO’s) would have to be involved in this yeomen service, more than that of government, in serving the senior citizens, opined union finance minister, P Chidambaram.

"Age"ing is inevitable. As the aricle rightly pOints out it is the tradition and root of Indian culture, like the Chinese to take care of our elders at home. Any thing short of taking care of the elderly, I would term as some sort of abuse and carelessness. India needs a law and the recent efforts to require children to take care of the elderly comes at a time, there is evidence that our elders have been subjected to die with worries and neglect and uncare.

The desire for affluency and the current trend of nuclear families are the breeding grounds for neglect of the aged. I had the opprtunity to visit some homes in Mangalore occupied by the aged, chldren in USA, UK, Australia and you name it. The ageing parents have no one to turn to for help. Long distance calls made by the folks do not provide this essential care. Does this have to be this way?

There were times when one child stayed home, predomonently the male to take care of the elderly but that scenario is slowly disappearing. Many parents and gradparents end up is old age homes because their children are far way or they are refusing to take care of them at home.

This is a tragedy. We have the obligation, we are acoountable for the wellbeing of our elders. If we do not take care of our elders are chances are our fate is going to be the same in my opinion. Lets not make our elders a burden on us rather spend good times in the last years of their life and I am ceratin we will be blessed.
