Mangalore, Oct 7: One need never be wary of diseases like diabetes and cardiac arrest as regular exercise would keep one away from the ailments, whereas regular health check-ups would also help illness away to a great extent, informed interventional cardiologist Dr D Narasimha Pai, MD, DM (Cardio) DNB (Cardio), assistant professor of Cardiology at KMC.

Dr Pai was addressing a free health check-up camp for diabetes and cholesterol organized by the Social Welfare committee, Milagres church held at its premises here, on Sunday October 7.
 
Parish priest Fr Walter D'Mello parish priest in his presidential address welcomed the gathering. In the course of his speech he appreciated the work as well as the services rendered by the social welfare committee. He even praised the church for organizing this free health check-up camp.

Speaking to daijiworld correspondent, the assistant professor expressed concern that diabetes is on steady rise in India and if this scenario continues then India would be the diabetic capital of the world by 2025. Enumerating the causes of this disease the assistant professor cautioned that obesity, lack of exercise, changing life styles, being office boarders are all contributing to the increasing number of diabetic patients in the country.
 
Regular exercise, undergoing periodic medical check-ups, especially after one's forties compulsorily, and giving up bad habits like smoking and drinking are all steps necessary to control the disease,  Dr Pai suggested.
 
People are not aware of the health risks involved in the cases of those prone to diabetic and heart problems, such persons only realize it when they develop cardiac arrest. He therefore, suggested that when they notice even the smallest symptom, it should be taken as an indication of a major disease and all necessary medical aids and precautions should be taken, informed Dr Pai.
 
Further Dr Pai was of the opinion that media should put in more efforts to spread awareness about the health risks involved in diseases such as diabetes and cardiac arrest.
 
Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Shreya Pharmaceuticals, Astrazeneca Pharmaceuticals and other Pharmaceuticals sponsored the medicines.
 
Dr Padmanabh Kamat, interventional cardiologist, Dr Rahul Narayan and Dr Abhishek PG Medicine, Alwyn Rosario, vice president, Milagres church were all present on the occasion.
