Women activists manhandled at Trimbakeshwar temple; 200 booked

Nashik, Apr 20 (PTI): A batch of women activists were allegedly manhandled by a group of locals while they were trying to enter into the sanctum sanctorum of the famous Trimbakeshwar temple today, following which the police booked 200 persons.

Former president of Trimbakeshwar Municipal Council Anagha Phadke is also among those booked, police said.

Talking to reporters ,Vanita Gutte, president of Pune-based 'Swarajya Sanghatana' said, "I was standing along with our women activists in the queue since 5 am to gain entry into the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. We also followed the dress code - wearing wet cotton clothes - for the purpose."

"The entry into the sanctum sanctorum is restricted between 6 am and 7 am, the time that has been fixed by the temple trust. However, some local priests and women deliberately stood in the queue before us and obstructed us from entering the sanctum.

They also manhandled us," Gutte added.

Thereafter, the activists lodged a complaint with Trimbakeshwar police against the priests and women.

"200 persons, including the former municipal president of Trimbakeshwar, have been booked under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 341 (wrongful restraint), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention)," Inspector of Trimbakeshwar police station H P kolhe said.

Police will go through the CCTV footage and will take action in this regard, he said.
The Trimbakeshwar Devasthan Trust recently decided to allow women into the famous Lord Shiva temple's 'garbha griha' (sanctum sanctorum) for an hour everyday, but with a rider that they must wear wet cotton or silk clothes while offering prayers in the core area.

On April 14, based on a complaint by Gutte that they were being obstructed from entering the temple, police had registered offences against nearly 250 people, including members of the temple trust, some local priests, and temple workers, under relevant sections.

I am bit surprised and amazed to hear the dress code for women to enter the temple is wet cotton dress???!!! Why is this wet cotton dress???!!! Is it not shows a women's complete figure. I don't think gods and goddesses also may not desire such a wet dress for women into the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Anyway I am not a person to poke my nose in your sanctums rules and regulations. I expressed my view. Rest is to the women who are agitating against the discrimination's meted out to them in their dharma.

    Hallelujah. Glory to God.

It is not good move by the activists going temple for the sake of going. They are looking for publicity only. Actually they are creating nuisance and polluting the place. While going temple people should maintain silence and should not go in big crowds like these activists. Also book activists for creating nuisance.

    Sri,

Like I said earlier, one more Temple/Church/Mosque in a country will make least difference, so will it if women go or not into a particular temple. They may stay outside like Kanaka Dasa and say their prayers.

However, why this sabotage of faith from humans(males) towards the other gender ? Who imposed it ? Men - right ? What power do they have to impose restrictions on women on entering the temples or not ?

Look, rules and regulations were made by us humans, many have amended, many made stricter. However, how a man can say to his wife, 'you stay here, I'll pray and come' ? What is his answer for her protests and demand for prayer ?

Women have abided silently all these years, now they have mustered courage to protest. Please note, the activists are not non-worshippers, or come just for publicity, they too have come to worship !

    Lydia,
Traditions and rituals in different religions are mostly put in place by men during earlier male dominated society.

The rules of life for nuns too follows the same line.
No point in writing your set of rituals are bad , mine i will not comment!!

    Shankar,

You have failed in your previous attempt of branding nuns being kept in shackles - please come up with some other reasoning.

If you don't want your wife to accompany you while you go to pray, you will be a distinguished entity and its her prerogative to succumb. But gradually women will make sure that they go to a place of worship with their male relatives, clad fully, in clothes of their desire.

This is what the activists are trying and I have total support to that ! There is no community applies here - because the same goes to Haji Ali Darga too.

Well, there is no dispute with Church goers, yet women do support in general for a fight against discriminative treatment irrespective of community, no matter how long you try to stand as a boulder on their path, you will see yourself overtaken.

What is the logic behind 'wet' sarees ?

Why silk of all fabrics ? Cotton is simple, silk is symbol of riches. How is this relevant ?

Why are people making worship difficult ?

Sri... in one of his pravachans, Lord Shiva lambasted those who wore silk because the process required killed several thousands of silkworms..
Ironically, the temple-wear is asked to be silk !
