Beltangady, Oct 18: Thefts are increasing in the last few months throughout Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.  While police are blamed most of the times for lack of vigil, one cannot deny the fact the even the people are responsible for this. Wearing ornaments to the tune of several lacs of rupees while going to any function and while at home has become a fashion these days.  This gives an easy chance for the thieves to target their houses and decamp with valuables.

This was proved right once again in one Gafoor's house at Aladangadi near here on Tuesday October 16 night.  Thieves who broke into the house in the small hours have decamped with gold ornaments worth Rs 7 lac while 9 members of the family were fast asleep in the house.

The thieves gained entry into the house after unlatching the back door.  Once inside the house, they have ransacked almost all rooms and have decamped with 880 grams of gold ornaments.

Gafoor is the brother of K M Masood, former president of state minority commission. The entire family had retired to bed after watching TV programmes after midnight.  The theft came to light when they woke for early morning prayers at 4.

The thieves have first come to the room where Gafoor was sleeping and grabbed the key bunch which was kept in the drawer.  With those keys they emptied the jewellery placed in the almairah which was in another room.

The stolen items included one mangalsutra and bracelet, 3 rings, 1 watch, earrings of 10 sovereigns.  Along with this 15 rings, 2 large necklaces, 1 pearl necklace, 5 small necklaces, 8 earrings, 3 bracelets, 1 watch, 12 bangles, 2 earring falls, 1 mangalsutra, 1 chain, altogether 110 sovereigns and cash of Rs 3,000.
