Udupi: Enough drinking water in district to last till May 26: MLA Madhwaraj

Udupi, May 11: “People need not worry about water crisis in district as we have enough drinking water to last till May 26. We are safer than many other districts. We are giving top priority to solving water scarcity than any other work,” said MLA Pramod Madhwaraj in a press meet at Sathyamurthy auditorium on Wednesday May 11.

“If it does not rain till May 13, we will offer prayers for rain in Ananteshwar temple, church and masjid,” he said.

Addressing in a grievance meet, called by various department officials, he said, “If any complaint is received from public regarding water crisis, commissioner will be held responsible for it. Strict action will be taken against officials who do not heed to public’s problem. Commissioner should constantly review officers who are supplying drinking water to people.”

“CMC has released strict circulation on applying bulk water metres but many people are not following it. We will release another notice on this regard.”

“There are enough water sources in Udupi. We need to find proper distribution system.” 

MLA Madhwaraj also informed that a deliberation was going on to install mandatory rain harvesting system in all buildings before issuing license for the construction.

One of the locals from Kallugudde localities complained that nearly ten families were not getting water for many days. MLA Madhwaraj assured to solve the problem and directed the concerned authority to solve this problem on priority.

To deal with present situation of water woes, he even suggested reviving old or dead bore wells if necessary.

In total, 70% of drains have been silted in city and the rest of the part will be completed soon. Municipality has purchased two tippers and a Hitachi worth Rs 23.7 lac for the same purpose. 

MLA Madhwaraj also received complaints from public regarding electricity. Locals complained that concerned department was not accepting any complaints from public since April 25, 2016.

Replying to this, commissioner Manjunathayya said, “There are 298 pending complaints in the department because of which the officials were unable to solve new problems.” 

Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje, CMC president, Sandhya Thilakraj, vice president and other officials were present along councillors.
