Mangalore: MCC to Experiment Manned ‘Pay-and-park’ System

Mangalore, Oct 26: The parking irregularities are plaguing the city, more than many other issues in this fast-developing city.

Earlier the parking woes were experienced by the motorists in general.  Now the pinch is being felt everyone.

The motorists hard to find parking space for their vehicles. On the other hand, the general public is inconvenienced by the haphazard parking by motorists.  Besides, the parking irregularities significantly contribute to the traffic chaos.

The parking problem was being aggravated day by day since neither Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) nor the district administration was bothered over parking irregularities in the past.  But the good news is that MCC has now come forward to resolve the issue after the parking difficulty had grown beyond limits. 

In this direction, the MCC has been taking necessary steps to implement ‘pay and park’ facility across the city, as they believe this would solve the parking woes of motorists.

Remedy

M Maheshwar Rao, deputy commissioner and MCC administrative officer was of the view that ‘pay and park’ system, manned by attendants would solve parking difficulties as also other related difficulties.

Mobile policemen are also looking forward to introducing ‘pay and park’, said mobile police officer.

MCC has decided to introduce the system at the earliest at some prominent points across the city, which are prone to traffic density and jams.  The future course of action would follow after assessing the pros and cons of parking system, informed MCC commissioner, while speaking to daijiworld.

Accordingly, the first phase of ‘pay-and-park’ system would be introduced near the Bunts Hostel, Jyoti, Balmatta, Central Market, Hampankatta and M G Road in the city. 

MCC sources stated that the tenders would be called within a few days to introduce the parking system, while it would come into force by 25 days.

Space constraint

The initial survey has been made to introduce the parking system in the city.  If MCC hurriedly introduces the system there are possibilities of creating traffic chaos.  The city lacks parking space at a number of points, which factor contributes significantly to parking irregularities.
