Mangalore, Nov 5: The Railway Fighters' Federation which recently came into existence celebrated the centenary of Mangalore Railway Station on Sunday November 4 evening.

The federation members gathered at the Railway Station and celebrated the centenary by cutting a cake. Later they distributed sweets at the Railway Station.

Speaking on this occasion, Harikrishna Punarur, honorary president of the Federation said that the Railway department had the responsibility of celebrating this mega event. But, they did not do so. Hence, the Committee is celebrating the centenary, he added.

P V Mohan, one of the conveners of the Federation, said that the Railway department has the responsibility to inform glorious history of city’s railway station. However, the railway officers here completely neglected it, he accused.

Earlier, a joint meeting of Mangalore Railway Action Committee and Railway Fighters’ Struggle Committee was held at Kandaya Bhavan, located near DC office.

The meeting decided to form a single federation, instead of fighting separately for the same cause. Hence, the Mangalore Railway Fighters’ Federation was formed at the meeting.

Harikrishna Punarur (honorary president), former MP Ibrahim (chairman), P V Mohan and Dinesh Hegde Ulepady (conveners), Jagadish Shenava and Umar U H (spokespersons) were appointed as the office-bearers of the Federation.

The Federation has decided to urge the local MPs, in an open forum, in order to take up the railway connectivity issues of coastal Karnataka, at the parliamentary session.  Moreover, P V Mohan decided to go on hunger strike from Monday November 12 onwards.

It is quite heartening to note that Mangalore Railway Station(MAQ) has completed 100 years ! But at the same breath it is rather disappointing that no real new major Railway activities have been noticed either at MAQ or nearby. Even the MCF and other Industries have to run to Palghat for any facilities or requirement of wagons/ rakes . The facilities at most Railway Stations in the D.K.Coast are pathetic and the locals have been silent , as also the politicians . This is mainly due to the fact that Mangalore comes under Southern Railway Hqs (MAS)and controlled by Palghat Division .

There have been many voices on this forum suggesting that MAQ be under S.C. Railway (Hubli) . This change is very much desirable if we wish to see any development for Railways in Dakshina Kanada and Railway links to Bangalore and other Districts in the state. Hopefully , the recently formed 'Mangalore Railway Fighters’ Federation 'will fight for various causes and put a stop to outsiders dominance at MAQ.
