Nadal, Muguruza to lead Spain tennis team in Olympics

Madrid, June 17 (IANS): Injury-battling Rafael Nadal and Garbine Muguruza will lead the Spanish tennis team at the Olympic Games in Rio, according to the list sent by the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation RFET, based on both players' individual ATP and WTA rankings.

Apart from world No.4 Nadal and recently-crowned French OPen women's singles champion Muguruza, the list also includes David Ferrer, Roberto Bautista Agut, Albert Ramos and Carla Suarez, Efe reported on Thursday.

The Spanish team will compete under the leadership of Conchita Martinez.

After the RFET list was announced, Martinez said Spain has great chances to advance in the competitions at the Olympic Games as all team players will fight to win medals.

Fourteen-time Grand Slam winner Nadal is currently battling a wrist injury and has already decided to pull out of the Wimbledon, to be held between June 27 to July 10 in London.

The Spanish team will arrive in Rio de Janeiro on July 28. The Games begin from August 5.
