Bengaluru: After fighting for Fr Chasara's statue, agitation over dead body

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jul 12: The troubles in the Bengaluru Archdiocese, which have already resulted in the murder of the then Rector of St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary Fr K J Thomas three years back and the subsequent arrest of two priests and filing of charge-sheet in the murder case against four more Catholic priests, one of whom Fr Chowrappa Selvaraj alias Chasara died recently, seem to never end.

With the supporters of Fr Chasara installing a statue in the compound of St Paul the Hermit Church at Vishwanatha Nagenahalli within a month of his death due to illness and in defiance of the Canonical warning issued by Archbishop Dr Bernard Moras that the Church will be closed as per the Code of Canon Law governing the Universal Catholic Church, and the consequent closure of the Church, the supporters have now resorted to an unusual form of protest against the closure and demanding the reopening of the church by placing the deceased body of a 65-year-old Catholic woman, who died on Sunday, in the church premises.

The supporters of Fr Chasara, who had filed a case in the court against Archbishop Moras challenging his order for Canonically closing down the church, are now trying to create further embarrassment to the Archbishop by placing the deceased body of Chinnamma Chowrappa (65), who died on Sunday, in the portals of the closed St Paul the Hermit Church and alleging that the Archbishop was "refusing funeral rites."

Fr A S Anthonyswamy, Public Relations Officer, Archdiocese of Bengaluru, has in a press release, clarified that "certain agitating groups of people are whipping up communal tension in society and disharmony in the Church by housing the deceased body of a 65-year old Catholic woman till date and time (died Sunday July 10, 2016), in the canonically shut down Church of St Paul the Hermit Church in VishwanathaNagenahalli. Some of the agitators/protestors are ill-informed or misinformed and not in any way associated with the Church pastoral and temporal administration."

"The protestors are refusing to proceed with funeral rites, accusing the Archbishop Dr Bernard Moras of showing ‘dishonor’ to the deceased and ‘denying Catholics’ their Rights," Fr Anthonyswamy said clarifying that the "accusations and allegations are ill-tempered, baseless and a deliberate maligning and perversion of Truth."

He has also clarified that the "neighboring Church, (St James Church, Marianapalaya) has been entrusted to attend to the Spiritual needs of the Church members in view of St Paul the Hermit Church being closed till the unlawfully installed bust of the priest is removed. St James Church and its priest/priests serving there have been officially permitted to address all the Spiritual needs and perform rituals for the members of St Paul the Hermit Church whenever needed, till the Church is officially re-opened."

The text of the press release is as follows:

Agitators Refuse To Move Deceased Body From Church; Archbishop Clarifies over spurt of misinformation

1. Certain agitating groups of people are whipping up communal tension in society and disharmony in the Church by housing the deceased body of a 65-year old Catholic woman till date and time, (died Sunday July 10, 2016) in the canonically shut down Church of St Paul the Hermit Church in VishwanathaNagenahalli. The agitators are spreading false propaganda that the neighboring Church of St James (officially entrusted for the spiritual needs of the people) is refusing funeral rites.

2. Some of the agitators/protestors are ill-informed or misinformed and not in any way associated with the Church pastoral and temporal administration and are making highly insensitive, perverted and misdirected statements in public and in the Media, falsely accusing the Archbishop and also disturbing the peace of the Church community.

3. Be it known to all that St. Paul the Hermit Church was shut down by Archbishop Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras on 21st April 2016 as it was binding upon him by the universal Catholic Church Law (Canon Law) and in full justification of his Office as Archbishop of Bengaluru Archdiocese.

4. That he was doing it with great pain but had to abide by Canon Law in the interest of the whole church. He communicated in clear terms that Canon Law 1187 permits the statue, bust or image of any person who is declared ‘Saint’, ‘Blessed’ can be erected within the Church/Church premises. Any installation of an image/statue in the Church requires the explicit consent/permission of the Archbishop.

5. The Church was shut down because a bust of deceased Bengaluru Archdiocesan priest C. Selvaraj was unlawfully installed in the Church in Full violation of Canonical regulations and without the permission/consent of the Archbishop and despite official public warning and also official intimation to the serving Parish Priest. Despite being fully made aware of the rightful closure of the Church, some protestors have also been fanning flames of disharmony by hunger-strike, demanding reopening of the Church.

6. The allegations and accusations that the deceased Chinnamma Chowrappa (65) is being denied funeral rites is a BLATANT LIE aimed at creating communal tension. Archbishop Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras has publically and officially communicated Church members vide his communication dated 4th May 2016 that alternate arrangements have been made for the spiritual needs of the people. He has done so by virtue of his Office and with deep personal spiritual concern for the Spiritual needs of all the Church members

7. The neighbouring Church, (St. James Church, Marianapalaya) has been entrusted to attend to the Spiritual needs of the Church members in view of St. Paul the Hermit Church being closed till the unlawfully installed bust of the priest is removed. St. James Church and its priest/priests serving there have been officially permitted to address all the Spiritual needs and perform rituals for the members of St. Paul the Hermit Church whenever needed, till the Church is officially re-opened.

8. The Archbishop desires this Office to communicate emphatically, that by his conscience, he holds in highest regard and in daily prayer, all the people entrusted to his pastoral care and also seeks the prayers of all people that Truth may prevail over Untruth and Peace over disharmony.

If we desire to go to heaven, we MUST be in the state of sanctifying grace AND we cannot die with mortal sin.

Jesus said love one another as I loved you. He gave himself for the world and saved it from destruction. Buildings and wealth can be acquired any time through any means. But the truth that leads you to heaven has a narrow path. Do you remember Jesus said and written in scriptures it is easier for a camel to pass through the hole of needle than a rich man to reach heaven. Why there should be any dispute with spiritual leaders who guide one on their path of life?

    KR Prabhu,
Like everyone, Christians also have internal problem, we admit it. But you have perfect prejudicial mind.
You have quoted no fight for independence suits best to your Sanghis.
Dr. Annie Besant gave a lead by claiming Home Rule for India.
Dr. Allan Octavian Hume was one of the founders of the Indian National Congress lead in the Indian independence movement.
But Sanghis were collaborated with British!
However, after the Independence, your Sanghis have come to take credit!

If someone wants to be known as Roman Catholic and would like to practice the religion they have to abide by the Law of the Church. Hence it is good for them to go according to the Religion Leaders as the dead body doesn't speak or act. It is the living people who want their way of burial so justifiably follow the rules. May her soul rest in peace

This is the same Canon that sanction prosecution of Galileo for stating that the earth goes around the sun and sanctioned inquisition in the middle ages. The same Canon prohibited Catholic laity from reading the Bible till nineteen thirty-six. It is time to dump these outmoded weapon and replace it by the law of Jesus which requires the treatment of people and particularly the poor in a humane manner. The Canon does not apply in India. Please refer to the Supreme Court decision in the petition moved by Clarence Pais on the powers of the Catholic Church in India to sanction divorce. There is no place for Canons in today's society. There is need for charity and compassion that are the teachings of Jesus.

Apart from taking legal and moral high ground the issue there is an element of humour. It reminds me one of the incidents narrated to me years back in Udyavar. Before the Udyavar Church was built the dead were to be taken to Kallianpur for Burial. As the road passed through the Krishna Mutt, and given the orthodoxy of the Mutt the dead body was not allowed to pass through in the vicinity till the pooja was over in the temple. Enraged, mourners left the body at the gate and left, only to be begged by the brahmins to take the body and was allowed to pass through in the vicinity.
In this case though the matter is different the basics are same. Church should deal with this matter in a more amicable matter. There are many canonical provisions which are flouted by the clergy so why use the canons selectively to enrage people. A shepherd in this case the Arch Bishop, should treat his flock with compassion and love. Why enrage them? After all church belongs to people not the Vatican. Step down from the throne, keep aside the mitre and take people in confidence and see the difference. Don't allow the dead body to be used as weapon. The helplessness of the people is more than evident in this case else they would not have used the dead against the living.

Dear Sir, very logical point as similar view was shared here before down the lane by Mr. D Souza.
Canonizing has no practical application here for the domestic cases which were built shere through negligence and politics. It is shame that situation reached up to dead bodies as a bargaining chip.

These controversies should end. Archbishop Bernard Moras has acted as per Church Law and he is not all in this decision.

The so-called Christians should abide be the decisions taken by The hierarchy and not create tensions on this issue.

It is time that people come together and remain united by trying to understand the Church Laws. Archbishop Moras is not making his own laws to suit his convenience but is doing his job as he should as per Church Law.

Every Action has an Equal and Opposite Reaction?

Despite all past controversies, as the head of Church, let Dr. Bernard Moras re-initiate peace move of forgiveness in the name of our Savior by opening the church. As a reciprocatory gesture other party will surely remove Fr. Chasara's bust , women's dead body and an end future controversies.

At times, as your see here , sheep may not follow the voice from Rome (Canon Law) but surely Christ's voice of peace as sheep tend to recognizes their master's true voice.

In any Church administrations if name of Christ is not gloried,
name of opposition will be magnified similar to this case – scandalizing.

Proverb 16:7, When a man’s ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

    Dear Anp, Blur,

Jesus speaks about the spiritual Sword. Not the material sword.
Are two swords enough for billions???!!!
If you put the verse Luke 22:36 is right that means God is all powerful and God can destroy the wicked at any time and preserve the good.
That is is the spiritual sword of ?Christ Jesus. God is in control. Criminals, rapists, murderers will not escape.
John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Luke 5:32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

This is really a cheap nature of so called Kannada Catholics despite court allowed to offer masses in Konkani for konkani catholics, They feel inferiority and insecure in front of majority of other linguistic Catholics. So all these drama's, goondagiris in the church. They also know that for their goondagiris they can get sympathy from like-minded kannada sangha's. I request state government should take strict action against these rowdies and maintain court order in all the Banglore churches
