Ballari, Jul 21: Well-known writer, researcher and historian, Dr M Chidananda Murthy, opined that Madesnana, a popular form of religious vow performed during annual festival at Kukke Subrahmanya temple, should not be banned.

He was addressing media persons at Hampi near Hospet in the district where his new volume 'Hosa Belakinalli' was released.

Adding further, Murthy said that there was no need to ban Madesnana as no one faces trouble because of it. "The state government, before implementing the anti superstitions act, should carefully study superstitions as different from faith. There is no doubt that ban on sacrifice of animals and birds, wife killing herself by entering pyre of her husband, and human sacrifice should be imposed," he asserted.

His new work stated above was released at a function l held at Lord Virupaksheshwara temple, Hampi. Speaking on the occasion, he said that but for the rise of Vijayanagara empire at Hampi, Hinduism would have been extinct from south India and most of the people would have become Muslims.

Murthy's new volume, 'Hosa Belakinalli' happens to be a collection of eight works. He said that his work mentions that Jagajyothi Basavanna belongings to 'Loukiki (Niyogi - Brahmin)' caste, and that it also provides details of different lineages of kings apart from Vijayanagara empire. "There is mention about ban on cow slaughtr too," he added.

The volume was released by Sri Vidyaranya Bharati Swamiji of Vidyaranya Math, Hampi.
