Qatar Airways plane makes emergency landing at Istanbul airport

Doha, Aug 18 (Reuters): A Qatar Airways aircraft made an emergency landing at Istanbul's Ataturk airport on Thursday after its landing gear failed to retract on take-off, an airport official said.

The Airbus 330 had been headed for Doha. There were no immediate reports of any casualties.

The official could not confirm an earlier report by broadcaster CNN Turk that one of the plane's engines caught fire.

The aircraft, an Airbus 330 bound for Doha, landed safely and passengers disembarked as normal, Qatar Airways said.

Jossey, I'm also not an aeronautical engineer, but read all these things from the internet.

Thanks dear Rob Stan for enlightening on the technical parameters. I mostly fly by this airline to Bombay, but as the saying goes there is no guarantee for human beings, so too with machines. Wear and tear is an integral phase of life, though by all means air travel is STILL considered to be the safest mode of transport by any means and making one wonder if such things went unreported.

Joseph, there is no guarantee for anything in this world, but the passengers need to feel safe, so the aircraft has redundancy systems in place. Even if the fuel gets over or if all the engines fail, still the aircraft can glide provided the pilot is good enough to land the aircraft either in water or adjust the thrust in such a way that it lands in the nearest airport neither further nor before the runway. Even in case of Malaysian Airline 370, the flight landed in water after the fuel got over after glided to a certain distance and then got sunk after some time, but still there was time for rescue if the help was available.

I meant safety when I mentioned wear & tear, as it is not safe to continue the journey as it can be unsafe for the same trip with the landing gear not in retracted position. So they landed in the closest airport. Aeronautical engineers are also human beings, so there is always a chance for error, but the aircraft has redundancy equipment and procedures. Now the aircraft's are capable of flying for 18 continuous hours and 777x which is under production can fly even further. It has two engines and they have made sure that there is airport in a distance of 330 minutes from the current position of the aircraft for the present 777 200 LR which has maximum range apart from A380. Now the aircraft's fly around the globe in 3 directions - westward, eastward and through north pole for ultra long distance flights.

Any disturbance or technical snack is not good to the passengers who travel in the plane and need to be looked into to make it zero for the safe fly and timely reaching the destination

@jossey - have you watched birds flying high.. Especially craws and eagles.. They pull their legs and fold it closed to body. If they hang it down they cannot balance body?

Can we risk 300 lives if landing gear fails ...

Jossey, landing gear needs to be retracted as it blocks air and it works against the aerodynamic nature of the aircraft for it to fly smoothly. Also there is a chance of more wear and tear if its against wind all the time. This time there was no risk for emergency landing as it was opposite to landing gear not lowering down in which case it would have been necessary for belly landing. In recent Emirates accident, I think the front landing gear broke may be because of rough landing by the pilot, so there was no time for belly landing.
