Sullia: Bellare college - Hijab-saffron shawl dispute refuses to die down

Daijiworld Media Network - Sullia (SP)

Sullia, Sep 5: A large number of male students of Dr Shivaram Karanth government first grade college at Peruvaje, Bellare, have been attending college with a saffron shawl on their shoulders since the last several days, in protest against allowing girl students to wear hijab (scarf) around their faces when attending classes.

Although a meeting of college development committee and parents was held on Saturday September 3 in the college premises, a solution remained elusive.

After the meeting, principal of the college, Chandrashekhar Kanthamangala, said that the meeting resolved to try to convince the students not to wear anything other than the college uniform. It is gathered that parents raised serious objection to this decision as there was no clarity on the stand. They barged into the chamber of the principal and urged him to take a clear stand. However, at the end, the meeting ended without a clear stance.

Addressing the meeting, Subhashchandra Thota said that the student leader of the college is expected to protect students when they face external threats, and the leader should not wedge differences among the students. Parents of students like Deekshit, Yathish Kumar, Sathish Kaniyur and Srinath felt that students should be barred from wearing Hijab as well as shawls when attending classes. Ismail said that as per the religious diktat, wearing of hijab is compulsory.

MLA, S Angara, who also happens to be the president of college development committee, presided. He felt that everyone should respect the rule about wearing of uniform and religious beliefs and issues should not be brought into the educational institutions. He asked people not to create undue confusion, give prominence to become large-hearted and educated persons, and always think about future of students.

Vice president of the committee, S N Manmatha, members, Ramesh Shetty, Anil Rai, president of teahers-parents association, Vasant Borkar, and others were present.

Very sad to see the comments : how come people hate each other ? what happened to the people of India ? Is this the same India people used to love each other no matter of religion cost, years before. Is the inner hateness coming out all of sudden now a days or people lost their mind and dance to the tune of dirty politics ?????

Yes...my comment is still valid and relevant. Those Christians who wore shawl in the article mentioned were at a function and they have no history of trouble mongering just as Rama Sene, Bajrangdal, RSS etc..etc have. But, mind you, my comment was meant only for those who are intelligent enough to understand the reality and accept it....others can hold on to their biased, flower pot mentality and "never grow up" attitude...

Among the Sikhs, the Dastaar(turban) is an article of faith that represents honour, self-respect, courage, spirituality, and piety.

This does not stop community being serving for the nation in armed forces. In 2012 British media reported that a Guardsman of the Scots Guards Jatinderpal Singh Bhullar became the first Sikh to guard Buckingham Palace wearing a Dastaar instead of the traditional bearskin.

Veiling did not originate with the advent of Islam. Statuettes depicting veiled priestesses precede all three Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam), dating back as far as 2500 BCE.Elite women in ancient Mesopotamia and in the Byzantine, Greek, and Persian empires wore the veil as a sign of respectability and high status.

For centuries headscarf remained part of our Indian culture.Though it may variant in style.

'Ghunghat' or headscarf is the dignity of women.

Guys this shawls around your neck is being drapped by those ladies for centuries. It may be different in colour and style.

Do not bring politics into the college campus. This is the place you build your future. It won't be too late to realise if you see your co student in high positions.

These 'shawl' around your neck don't even reflect Indian culture."Shirts (European), Pants/Pyjamas (Chinese/Central Asia), socks, T-shirt and baniyan yes your underwear too (Jersey was invented in Europe), Kurtas (Central Asia, Ottoman, Moghul). That leaves you with a kashti or pudvem and a shawl or cloth to cover your torso.

Don't spoil the name of the Jnanpith Award Kota Shivaram Karanth.

Please remember that wearing turban by Sikh is accepted as part of the UNIFORM by armed forces.

In the college where problem is happening, Burqah is not considered as UNIFORM.

We should teach children how to follow, not to disobey in the name of religion.

For your info, many Sikhs worldwide cut their hairs to follow UNIFORM. For god's sake, don't compare disciplined SIKHISM with ISLAM.

Wearing Burkha or shawl by muslim woman is a tradition for a long time. But sudden start of wearing shal by male students is the practice only for creating hatred. And wearing shal does not look good in college. As my knowledge That is not compulsory also for Hindhus as toppi to muslim Boys. With uniform if one shal put on their head nothing will happen. This Only started to create gap between Hinhus and muslims to get political Mileage.

    UNIFORM should be always UNIFORM
    It can not be MULTIFORM

The society gets divided when children are at young by not following UNIFORM...

We guys are already spoiled with so much of communal things in the brain.. At least let us allow the future of India not to get divided by following UNIFROM

Rule is a rule even for a fool. Religion, whatever form it might be, should not be allowed to enter education or any public system. Can anyone tell Ismail that the PMs/ex PMs of Pakistan and Bangladesh are Muslims but they did not wear Burka and I personally know many Muslim ladies who work in a very high profile job who wear proper office dress but are religious once they are out of office.

Sulaiman, Burka don't trouble me. I don't care if someone want to be inside the burka for religious reason. What my point is that is Burka compulsory for every Muslim women? Do not say it is, because I can prove you wrong. Is head scarf compulsory? Probably yes from religious point of view BUT are there Muslim women without wearing head scarf in this world? Indeed, there are millions. If you have been to any of the Western countries that includes Singapore, Japan, Korea, Russia, Australia, NZ, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Malaysia, Americas that include Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia or Chile, you will find a lot of women who do not even wear a head scarf. Do you disown them?? MY point in this forum was very clear. Religious things should not be rigid. There must be some flexibility and hence students can attend educational institutions without showing their religion. I am not against to a particular community because in another comment, I said no cross, nama, shabarimale fittings, juttu, rakhi and other wrist bands allowed in schools. My question was very clear: Cant WE all sacrifice something if that act benefits for the betterment of our nation??

At college level uniform is not compulsory that does not mean that students should be allowed to wear clothes/attire of their choice. College rules should be common to all and students should abide by the rules laid down by College administration. As far as possible religious sentiments and dress code should not be mixed up at educational institution. Already students are split on difference opinion and this controversy can worsen further.

For Sikhs Turban " its constitutional rights" and separate Law are there in Indian Constitution. Do not mix Sikh Turban with others....

BTW, just check Armed Force or Police Force. Sikh's never wearing Caps or Berets. But they wearing Armed Force's stipulated color or Khaki color Turbans.

Secondly Police or Security Force personnel can grow beard or Hair….But Sikh can keep trimmed beard

Students wearing saffron shawl is recent development and has nothing to do with religion. In this case they are only wearing it as weapon to protest against another religion and its observance. And THAT IS WRONG....The hijab was there for ages but shawl became the identity of protest and extremism. The students may do well to understand this and concentrate on their studies and career than these useless things which will eventually ruin their career. Look at the pictures above, the boys act as if it's a fun time...Truly sad moments for our district...

You said: shawl became the identity of protest and extremism..

This is applicable to Mahatma Gandhi, who used to wear shawl???

The shawl was there from ages and that is meant for wearing. That is the Indian tradition of respecting others.. "Shawl hodhisi sanmaana"

    @RSRB
Here the students have not come with shawls after the sanmana or to honour Gandhi. Moreover, the shawls used for the above are of different colours and not just one colour. The type of shawls which the students in the picture are wearing have come to be identified with trouble, extremism, fight, communal violence, hatred and rejection. You are welcome to disagree for reasons known to you alone....

Then what is your view regarding Bindi, Religious lockets, Saffron tread on wrists, etc.... Don't u think these things also kept at home. While we r in govt. primary school every Friday in last period time there was Sharada pooja. Most principals office has God/Goddesses photo. Why not your logic applies here ? If u people want religious practice at home why don't u protest against these.

    Hussain Bhai,
I too have studied in and around Mangalore.
I too had Muslim classmates from 1st standard itself. Some girls were my classmates till Degree. They were not wearing and headgear in classes. Of course they used to cover their head with shawls when going out.
Were these changes recently included in the scriptures? Do you remember seeing Muslim ladies covering whole of their faces ten years ago in Mangalore?

Regarding saffron shawls, i can just say the boys are fools. Their parents need to intervene if they want a better future for their kids and to be taken care well at their old age.

    @ Shankar,

Here the point is one of intention....,

Islam faith profess/mandates to wear Hijab to protect the modesty of a woman.

What value does Saffron shawl has other than promoting a sense of fear among people around...?

Sorry to see the thinking & social behavior of these youths (are they doing it on their own or under the influence & direction of somebody).

I see a sense of intolerance & hatred (i may be wrong also but a true introspection of ones mind & heart may contradict).

It is really painful to know political interference in Education system. Muslim girls are wearing Hijab from long time and its allowed in Most of the institution and its their constitution right.

Someone cant say we will wear RSS/PFI uniform in schools/Colleges.

Let us respect everyone's religious belief and parents should concentrate more on children's academic life then political life.

    @ professor sir,

Though you made a valid & worthy point..., I fear you may be potentially tagged or termed as anti- national....?

It is the primary duty of the parents to mend the ways & social behavior & thinking among these youths.

There is nothing wrong in joining or keeping association with self proclaimed patriot organizations, but there is a need for right thinking mind with an application of wisdom needed before indulge in these kind of protest.

If i am not mistaken, the underlying object is to give way to the fence sitters (behind the scene mentors having political bias & agenda in their mind), by indirectly challenging the constitutionally elected government of the day.

    Where are we heading...,

You better understand, there is no reservation you bring in educational institutions, Let them understand, you too, they are coming to learn to College not coming to Religious place for prayer.

Indian Politicians did enough partiality with the real poor citizens of India by giving reservation in the name of minority just for vote bank.

    Real minority people understand this.
