Udupi, Nov 19: MGM College, Udupi, through its National Service Scheme (NSS) Units 1 & 2 and IQAC, organised a unique and first-of-its-kind programme, ‘Heroes Behind the Siren – Guardians of Life’, at Nutana Ravindra Mantapa on Monday. The event honoured ambulance drivers from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts and provided a platform to share their field experiences and service challenges.
The programme was presided over by professor Vanitha Maiya, principal of MGM College. In her presidential remarks, she said, “I congratulate the NSS team for consistently organizing meaningful programmes with unique concepts. NSS celebrates every occasion by involving the community. Today, we honour the heroes who save lives by risking their own. I thank them for being guardians to people in emergency situations.”
























Dr M Vishwanath Pai, vice principal, graced the event as chief guest. He stated, “Ambulance drivers are true frontline warriors who risk their safety to ensure timely medical care. They deserve respect and recognition for their service. They not only drive ambulances but also ensure the safety of others on the road as well as the patients they transport.”
Social worker Eshwar Malpe, addressed the gathering. He said, “I thank MGM College for honouring ambulance drivers. They are the backbone of timely patient recovery. Doctors can save lives only when ambulances bring patients on time. Drivers often respond to midnight calls and travel long distances during emergencies. Their service must be appreciated and respected.”
During the programme, 18 ambulance drivers were felicitated for their outstanding service. Senior drivers including Eshwar Malpe, Nityananda Olakadu, Prasad from Mangaluru’s Shree Ganesh Ambulance, and several others participated in the interaction session, answering students’ questions and sharing insights into their work.
NSS officer Suchith Kotian welcomed the gathering. Usha Bhat delivered the vote of thanks, and Thanmayi Chatra compered the programme.
