Bengaluru: State defers water release to TN, calls legislature session on Sept 23 to decide

Bengaluru, Sep 21 (PTI) : The Karnataka government tonight decided to defer release of 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu till September 23, when a special session of the state legislature would take a decision on the Supreme Court direction.

"The Cabinet has decided to defer release of water," Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters in a brief statement after an emergency Cabinet meeting which was preceded by an all-party and council of ministers meetings during the day.

Siddaramaiah said the cabinet decided to convene the special session of the state legislature on September 23 in the backdrop of the apex court order yesterday, ordering

Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water till September 27 from today. He said the all-party meeting had advised the government to call the special legislature session to discuss the Supreme Court's direction and the Cabinet decided accordingly.

The Cauvery Supervisory Committee had on September 19 asked Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs per day from September 21 to 30 but the apex court had yesterday doubled the quantum to 6,000 cusecs from September 21 to 27 after Tamil Nadu pressed for water to save its samba paddy crop.

On September 5, the court had ordered release of 15,000 cusecs of water for the next 10 days to address the plight of the farmers in Tamil Nadu.

The quantum was reduced on September 12 to 12,000 cusecs to be released till September 20. Karnataka had complied with these directions thought it had been maintaining that the storage in its reservoirs was inadequate to meet the drinking water needs of its people.

Siddaramaiah had yesterday termed the Supreme Court's fresh order on release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as "unimplementable" and called for the all-party meeting.

    Water is Elixir of life..
It is a universal right ..
Now, India is blessed on North by the Great Natural Himalayas...
from where the melted water flows.freely..it is the right of all..
    Including the intense rainfall..
All we humans ..Indians need is to manage the flow..nothing more .. that too we are incompetent to manage ..studying this fact.. the great scientist and president advised the Govt to Nationalize the water bodies in the nation and
hand over the management to the Army or the Navy..
    with Projects.. and budget.
they are capable.professional. and efficient ..
    Not like this..
We cannot collect.. harvest.. stop the flow going waste in to the sea..
cannot build mini or micro dams.
    cannot build reservoirs. Pipeline.. nothing...
this is a huge human tragedy...
here is the professional management was needed.
instead of this ..politicizing the issues.. and burning buses.... closing schools.. ???
    disrupting public life?
only illiterate..ill mannered ..uncivilized can do.. this subversive activity.. be educated. protest Professionally..
    in any case..
Indian govt has to hand over the Charge to the defense. they ob only can manage.
    sooner the better..
    Israel..Singapore.. Dubai has no water..
yet they are in surplus .. scientifically.. and professionally...
beyond any doubt.. as we live there , we experienced ..
But look in India.. when we have rains so intense i rainy season .and we do not know how to manage...
so dr kalam made such auseful recommendation.cant we at least follow some wisdom???

The former HC Judge of Chennai HC, Mr Shivappa states that the GOK should not have gone to the SC for the water dispute instead should have submitted before the Water tribunal. The legislature should discuss this as to who is advising the GOK and why blunders are committed?

Good decision by Siddhuji.. im sure Yeddy would not have take taken this decision.

All ppl residing in Bengaluru are also stake holders in kaveri issue. All beneficiaries of Govt must participate in the movement to get more share of Kaveri water for Karnataka. thats even so important considering multi fold increase in Bengaluru population. Process new Kaveri connections after additional share is availed. Denying water to farmers and diverting it to Bengaluru population who is indifferent to the issue may brand the Govt anti-farmer..

Siddu is a hero today in Karnataka. This action he should have taken long back.If so there would not have been so much loss to the government. In the days to come, he should not bend to anybodyIf he continue this action he will be the CM in the next election also and it is shame on the part of BJP for not attending the all party meeting. I think they will not get a single seat in the next election either MLA or MP.

Very Good Decision. In special session all parties should come together to take an unanimous decision. There should not be any politics here.
Legally there is an opinion that Supreme Court has limited jurisdiction in case of water disputes between states.

Diversion of source of drinking water is a serious matter of concern, particularly when there exists a drought like situation in peak summer, be it from DK or from Cauvery basin. Equality is enshrined in our constitution and all are entitled for this precious constitutional right from a democratic government. In fact, Mr. CM could have convened an all party meet and legislative session while taking decision on diversion of Nethravathy river too. Else, at least, he could have completed Social Impact Assessment on the diversion project to take people of the region to confidence. Nothing happened then for reasons best known to all. All decisions were taken in the wee hours of darkness with no inclusive element of transparency and trust. If source of drinking water for DK can be diverted to meet irrigation need of a region, a few tmct of water can also be released to the people from a rain shadow area. Logic cannot and should not be people and region-specific. Notwithstanding the above, Legislature providing a supporting hand to the executive to defy judiciary will not strengthen federalism.

We always believed in law of the country/land .... and the SC verdict is the final, Then why Karnataka govt tries to defers it forgetting we are all Indians? This means there is no respect for law and order! Where is the Waitress and Pappu and what is their say on this issue? Are we creating differences and boundaries within India to divide people on vote bank politics?

Why the centre, state and local bodies do not learn about water conservation and let loose the rain water drain into seas and oceans?
