Udupi: Lack of service road claims a life - auto driver killed

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Sep 22: In an accident which occurred in front of Saraswati Mandir School at Uchchila in Yermal Bada village near Padubidri on Wednesday September 21 morning, an auto rickshaw driver was killed. The victim has been identified as Dhanpal Salian (42) from Yermal Tenka village.

Three vehicles were involved with the accident, a scooty, an express bus, and an auto rickshaw.

Chaitra Kuckian (23), who was riding her scooty, entered the highway to go towards Kaup when the auto rickshaw driven by Dhanpal Salian from opposite direction hit her. Chaitra fell to the road and suffered minor nicks and cuts. The auto driver, who was on the wrong side of the road, suddenly swerved his vehicle to left because of the collision with the scooty. An express bus moving towards Udupi from Mangaluru instantly hit him. The auto rickshaw turned into a mass of mangled steel as a result, while Dhanpal was tossed to the road.

Salian, who suffered serious injuries to his head, limbs and body, was taken to a private hospital at Udupi. But he did not survive the journey to the hospital.
Dhanpal was the brother of former president of Yermal Tenka gram panchayat, Satish R Salian. He had entered marital life three years ago, and is survived by wife, an 18-month-old daughter, and brothers.

It is gathered that Dhanpal was returning to Yermal after ferrying some passengers to Bada village when he met with the accident. BJP district joint spokesperson, Shivaprasad Shetty, said that absence of service road was one of the reasons for this accident. He accused National Highways Authority of India for overlooking demand of locals for service road on either side of the highway.

In her complaint, Chaitra Kuckian said that drivers of both the auto rickahw and bus were responsible for this accident. A case stands registered in Padubidri station in this connection and Kaup police circle inspector has taken up investigation.

as usual, another victim for the bad, not bad... I saw worst infrastructure we have. I see both are responsible for this accident. I drive via this road very often.

First on the auto driver. Why the hell you take wrong way. You may avoid a short drive avoiding divider, but if your day is bad, it may cost you your life. I see so many vehicles come from opposite directing here. It's complete wrong direction for them. But they drive and come on your as if they have the right to do that. Many occasions opponent will avoid the collision and you are safe. But one fine day, it will happen as it happened today in this incident.

2nd point is on this Extress driver. they don't have any humanity ( in general ). they can come to any extreme while driving... they can go to exteme right... while overtaking you.... they can come extreme left if they want to overtake from left... anything is ok for them. They don't care who is there on their way... they leave the choice to you..if you want to be alive, run away from their way... if you don't they crush you like this... if there would have been some gap, auto could have escaped with out collision.... it's bad for both of them... and one paid for the disaster. RIP.

No matter how many roads are built, people are never satisfied. Why not follow some basic traffic rules instead of blaming lack of service roads. RIP

It was really sad new to hear.My colleague was totally heart broken hearing the news and couldn't even fly yesterday due to his health.I pray to god to give his family strength to face the fact and May his soul rest in peace. And I request the government authority to please make road with speed limits. So that these type of accident don't take place.

RIP. One of the main reason for many accidents is not following traffic rules. That too after NH is widened drivers should be more careful and follow the rules strictly as the Vehicles will be at speed on NH. Common mistakes are
    - Before entering NH not seeing whether there is Vehicle coming on NH in his side.
    - Driving on wrong side of the road
    - Crossing the NH wherever they want

    - Drivers driving at high speed on NH even where there is junction

Moreover NH is also not scientifically constructed specially the entry and exit to/from service roads.

Authorities should educate the people regularly in media reminding the traffic rules so that mistakes get reduced.

It has been noticed that any vehicle enters from service road to main road or NH never applies break. Who is moving in NH with normal to average speed very difficult to control their vehicle when somebody suddenly comes in front you. It is personal experience. Lack of road safety knowledge and lack of common sense and negligence.

    Rest in peace Mr.Salian.
