Sullia: Did bus conductor jump into river due to humiliation by police?

Daijiworld Media Network - Sullia (SP)

Sullia, Sep 27: Even after intensive search operations lasting two days to find Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) conductor who jumped into River Kumaradhara on Sunday after having been frustrated at his failed effort to convince a woman passenger that she had given him Rs 100 note not Rs 500, he could not be found. Devadas, the conductor in question, remains untraced even on Monday.

Search on

15 expert divers from Gundia and firemen from the fire brigade at Puttur have been conducting this search operation. The fire brigade personnel used boat in an effort to find the missing conductor, but their efforts went in vain. The operation was hampered by the fact that rain received at higher altitudes since the last two days has resulted in increased flow in the river.

Humiliation at Kadaba police station ?

In a press statement, social worker, Kittanna Rai Gurpur, taluk panchayat member, Sachin Adapa, Gurpur gram panchayat vice president, Uday Bhat, and a relative of the conductor, Chandrashekhar, demanded impartial investigation into allegations that the policemen of Kadaba, in the absence of station house officer, had undressed the conductor and assaulted him. Asserting that Devadas was a person of high level of honesty and integrity, they said that the conductor committed suicide out of humiliation he had suffered at the hands of constables and damage to his sense of self respect.

"The conductor and the woman had visited Kadaba police station to settle the dispute over change raised by the woman. The police action in removing his clothes and assaulting him is condemnable," they added.

Son speaks

Son of Devadas, Pavan, said that his father was self reliant and a man of integrity. "He always gave me advice on the need to remain honest and truthful in life. He was known for discipline and self restraint while discharging duties. KSRTC had honoured him thrice with 'best conductor' award. He can never end his life because of dispute over change. He ended his life on account of a sense of shame and insult at the harsh treatment he suffered at Kadaba police station. Therefore, we demand a thorough inquiry into this entire episode," he demanded.

According to Karnataka State Human Rights Commission majority of the complaints received by them pertain to police atrocities. Here the constable must be suspended for committing atrocities and charged for abettment of suicide. It should send a strong message to all in the police force.

Honest person does't mean he cannot make mistake.Misunderstanding by both the sides possible but excess money either with woman or with conductor. I think she is typical woman who took advantage of sympathy and law favoring to woman. I have similar experience in gulf while I paid Dhs 100 to sales woman while buying something but she denied but due to local law without arguing much I paid again. In this case woman and police equal responsible for conductors death.

Where is KSRTC union? Why they can't intervene and go for strike? This is a valid reason to go for strike to put pressure on govt to act.

Hes been awarded by the KSRTC for being a good conductor. I fear he was insulted and he felt bad and he committed suicide. Insults can always push a man to suicide especially when a woman insults him publicly. I am feeling very sad at the turn of events here

True No man must be insulted simply if he has done the right thing. He has won awards as best conductor so he must be a honest man. Sad that he jumped into river. He might have suffered so must mentally. If he jumped into river because he was insulted by the authorities its sad. I feel he might have felt ashamed of what he underwent in the police station. . Its a very sad thing.

If the report is true, which looks like it is because RS 500 will not lead a man to commit suicide. The Sr. Police officials should answer. Investigate and take immediate action against the constables in question. Which world are we living in? Who give police the right to assault the public. They must gather the proof. And to undress a person is in-humane and serious flaw in police training. There are few constables think that they are over all and can abuse, use filthy language or assault people. This is not policing they bring insult to remaining honest officers. Why is KSRTC silent? when they have honored the conductor thrice?

Where are we?Are we permanent on this earth?Whether it is Rs.500 or10 we lost a man of honesty and integrity.May his soul rest in peace.May the Almighty console and comfort his sorrowful family. My kind request to his son Mr.Pavan, please forgive the culprits.A day will come Our Almighty God will also act with them in a same manner. Our judgement is nothing compare to great Almighty God's judgement. No one can escape from His sight.By forgiving them you will have a great opportunity to give message to the entire world,Like the father is the son.You offer all the pain and sorrow you go through at the loss of your pappa.Your tears itself is curse to those who made him to be humiliated. No need of any verbal curse. You forgive and your family and dear ones will flourish.God bless you at all time dear brother Pavan. Your name itself is holy.So try your life too be like that holy in thought, word and deed. This is the best tribute you can render to your dear pappa.
