Mangaluru, Nov 9: People living in apartments located at Mannagudda have been struggling with the problem of insects and bugs since evening. Their peace of mind gets disturbed every day and their sleep is robbed every night because of the menace of cockroaches, other insects and bugs which invade their houses every evening.

Central warehouse in Mannagudda in the city under the central government, which was built several years ago for storing ration items meant for distribution to fair price shops in the district, has made the people of the apartments standing in the area to curse themselves for choosing to live here. The problem is particularly acute for people living in three apartments standing in the neighbourhood of this warehouse.

Worse of all, the insects also fall into their food plates and make their way into the ears during their sleep. In the morning, they are faced with the messy task of having to clear dead insects which cover the floors. An unbearable stench is always present inside their flats, these residents rue. The people of these apartments have been demanding for shifting the warehouse elsewhere.

Tarun, resident of one of these apartments, says that insects barge into his home through windows and doors and get into nooks and corners of the apartment including food items. People have made it a habit to put cotton into their ears before going to bed, he says.

The apartment residents, unable to bear the suffering anymore, went to the warehouse where they saw stock of rice that was covered by different kinds of insects and bugs. Angered by this state of affairs, they took to task the depot manager. The manager promised them of solving the problem.

A look at the current condition of the godown gives the visitors a feeling that stock of rice from here has never been sent anywhere since the last several months. When the rice is infected by insects, it becomes unfit for consumption. Therefore the department needs to attend to the problem and take steps to safe-keep the grains by taking appropriate steps including keeping the warehouse free of insects, and this step will automatically solve the problems of the apartment residents.

About 0.5km residents are facing these Insect problems around the Warehouse. We have been facing an onslaught of these small flying insects almost once a year for few days in addition to this rats are damaging the wiring and seats of the cars parked in the parking lots of apartments since the building is constructed. The permanent solution to this is shifting the Warehouse to outside the city.

Besides flies this warehouse is a breeding ground for rodents
(rats). This warehouse should be moved to the outskirts of Mangalore near Baikampady. Looking at these pictures I pity the people who buy and eat this type of rice / grain with the way it is stored. The warehouse is not properly maintained and without pest control.

I wonder when pest control was last done at this warehouse ? But for sure there would be huge pest control annual receipts kept ready without it actually been done.

An inquiry by the CID is necessary and the culprits taken to task or dismissed from service.

Shifting the warehouse is the best solution. When the city grows godowns, industries etc are being shifted to other locations in many cities. Why not in Mangalore?

some measures listed below can be used.

Scientists from the Centre for Plant Protection Studies of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and an official of Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation who visited the Food Corporation of India (FCI) at Peelamedu and nearby residential areas have suggested some pest control measures to prevent the pests from causing further problem to the public.
The team that visited the areas on Wednesday, however, told the people that the insects did not cause any direct harm to human beings, but only fed and multiplied on stored food grains.

They were urged to keep stored food grains in insect-proof containers to prevent multiplication of insects.
The Area Manager of FCI Coimbatore has been asked to use UV light traps for mass trapping of stored grain insect pests in warehouses. Two traps can be placed at the corners of a warehouse of dimension of 60m X 20m X 5 m for effective storage pest management. Stack storage traps can be used in stacks of grains without damaging them.
It is been recommended to use aluminium phosphide fumigation once in 45 days if more than two insects were found in 0.5 kg of grain or on need basis. Fortnightly spraying of malathion 50 EC on alleyways and gangways, and DDVP 76 WSC for air charging, were also suggested.
    FCI clarifies
Referring to reports on pest menace near the FCI godown, the management has said that it is taking efforts to control the infestation by deploying pneumatic compressor machines for cleaning the cobwebs, power sprayers for arresting the flying insects, and labourers for prophylactic and curative operations at the godown.
According to Area Manager K. Sathyakumar, machines have also been deployed for removing wild vegetation from the depot premises. The District Collector has supplied fogging machines for the cleaning and disinfecting operations.

Indeed this is a horrendous matter due to mishandling. In the surrounding areas also, open drain problems are creating a high incidence of mosquitoes/insects causing many people to fall ill with malaria/dengue/chikungunya and so on. Respiratory problems among aged and children is high. The MCC must seriously take up the matter
