Dubai: UAE church 'working' for release of abducted Indian priest

Dubai, Dec 30 (PTI): A vicar in the UAE has said he has got "strong indications" to believe that Father Tom Uzhunnalil, the Indian priest who was abducted nearly nine months ago from war-torn Yemen, is alive, a media report said today.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia said it is making "all efforts to secure a safe release" of the priest kidnapped from Aden in March, Khaleej Times reported.A video of Uzhunnalil had surfaced this week in which he made an appeal to the Indian government, Pope Francis and Bishop Paul Hinder, to save his life.

Hinder, who is based in Abu Dhabi, is the current Vicar Apostolic of the vicariate."The features of the person speaking in the video bear a close likeness to Father Tom. However, the source of the video, the date of its creation and the circumstances under which it was recorded are unknown. Even though we have no information about Father Tom's present whereabouts, we have strong indications to believe that he is still alive," the vicariate said in a statement.

The church said it has made countless appeals from the highest levels to secure Uzhunnalil's release as well as made concrete efforts by way of working in close collaboration with both international and local diplomatic channels, it reported.

"Paul Hinder is in touch with the different channels, which are working and leading the dialogues to secure a safe release. More details cannot be disclosed at this stage," the statement said.

The bishop has led calls for prayer throughout the churches in the vicariate for Uzhunnalil. During the Christmas mass, the bishop and thousands gathered at the cathedral parish of St Joseph's Abu Dhabi to pray for the priest's safety.

"The Salesian Congregation to which Father Tom belongs and the Catholic Bishops Conference of India has been in touch with government channels," the statement added.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia is a territorial jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Church covering the UAE, Oman and Yemen. The office of the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia is based at St Joseph's Cathedral in Abu Dhabi.

Father Uzhunnalil, who hails from Kerala, was abducted in March by terror group Islamic State which attacked an old-age home run by Mother Teresas Missionaries of Charity in southern Yemeni city of Aden.

It's time Indian Christian make note of this thing, if he was a white European, Vatican city and Europe would seek his release. Because he is Indian, Vatican and Europeans are silent.. Also, another major fact is there are more number of practicing asian Christians in ASIA than Europe. Number of Christians in West is just 3%. And we still think Vatican is in power and bow to them, India has more number of Christians than whole Europe put together.. The worlds fastest growing religion is Adventist and Baptist (Protestant sect of Christianity) with mass conversion in Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Turkey and Afghanistan..with Catholics next in China and Korea and Vietnam..and then comes Atheism,, with Judaism and then Hinduism followed by Islam,,, Islam is fastest increasing population due to immigration in UK, which is always showed in news ( However, globally, the fertility rate has fallen and due to mass conversions, it's sloping down) I think its time we start forming our church in Asia.. Even Israel, Jesus birth place is in Asia.. Food for thought, why we still think Vatican is in power, when have not even helped Syrian and Iraqi Christians

All we can do is pray for his safety and release .Even our Church can not do much when such abducters are not willing to give information. They would have already released him by now ,if only wanted.Gods ways are different.Let him do as he wants.Or he (priest) can help the people who are really in need of spiritual help where he is now.even like helping old people?prayer is our strong weapon at this time.Wish in New year he may return.

Prayers and human effort combined can help his release. Fr Tom looked fatigued and breathless as he spoke. The abductors should release him and all who are held in captivity.

It is the duty and the responsibility of our church to secure release of beloved priest. When all the govt. agencies falsely promises their efforts to release the Priest, intervention of our Holy Father certainly will bear fruit. Though we common men can not do anything, we can use our prayers as a strong weapon to secure release of dear Priest. World should remember that the Priest did not risk his life to earn money, but to serve the war victims and the helpless. God certainly will be kind towards him.

The initiatives on the part of UAE Church for release of India priest is extremely noteworthy. The situation is very delicate yet it is essential for all humanitarian purposes.

Let there be peace on earth, and let those people coming forward to render a hand of help be rewarded in their efforts.

The reason it is taking very long time for his release is the captors demands are very high so the rescuers are weighing in the options.
