Sullia, Jan 4: Sullia police on Wednesday January 4 arrested 10 students on charges of ragging their juniors and threatening them.

The arrested are Krishna Kumar (24), Kannan A P (22), Farhan Mohammed (21), Sanjay Krishnan (23), Abel Roy (21), Jatin Jose (21), Wasim Zubair K T (26), Nibin Rahim (21), Neeraj Raviprasad (23) and Amal Raj (23). All of them are from different parts of Kerala. Some of them are pursuing MBBS and others BDS.

As per a complaint filed by 20-year-old student from Kerala, who is pursuing second year MBBS at KVG Medical College here, at around 9.15 pm on December 28, the group of accused took him and seven of his classmates to Kannan's room located near KVG Ayurvedic College and locked them in.

Among the accused, Neeraj beckoned one of the students and allegedly demanded that juniors should respect their seniors and punched him. Thereafter, Krishna Kumar allegedly abused the students and hit the complainant. When the latter objected, the entire group came forward to assault him. His classmates came to his rescue, but they were allegedly beaten up by the group. The junior students then began screaming, hearing which some persons who were outside came to the room to check.

On seeing the people, the accused sent away the complainant and other students. However, soon after, accused Neeraj and Kannan followed the junior students on their motorcycle and coaxed them to return and make peace with the other accused. But when they returned to the room, Krishna Kumar allegedly held the complainant by the collar, pushed him against the window grill and after hitting him, threatened to kill him and his classmates during the Sullia Jatra if they revealed the matter to anyone.

On Monday January 2, the student submitted a written complaint about the incident to the college principal, and on Tuesday January 3, he filed a complaint in Sullia police station.

Taking swift action in the case, the Sullia police arrested the 10 accused and produced them in the local court on Wednesday.

Further investigations are on.

    Rita,

Ragging isnt done only by students whose family are rich. It could be done on rich student by poor students or on poor student by rich students.

Blaming rich people is kind of pass time for some people.

Ragging is a menace which cuts short the academic ambitions of many students.

Some say, mild ragging is okay, it is fun and gives an option for the freshers to mingle and get adapted to college life. But which is the line between mild and hard, and who draws the line?

Kerala badly needs some good educational institutions specially in their border areas. This will prevent them entering into nearby states for higher education.

There are still ragging in many of the colleges including sullia. If victim try to take action, either college management or staff try to nullify the issue to safeguard the name of the college. This is a bold step from junior student. Tragedy is that he has jeopardized the rest of his years. That is the fact in many institutes. Ragging will not stop until strict action should be taken or culprits irrespective of gender and management supports the right side instead of safeguarding the institute name.
