Bengaluru, Jan 6: Even as the public in the coastal region are yet to be convinced that the Rs 12,900 crore Yettinahole project aimed at diverting the West-flowing Netravathy river water to meet the drinking water requirements of people in the Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Tumakuru and other areas, Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister M B Patil has urged the State’s irrigation officials to expedite the project.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru after chairing a review meeting of the performance of the state-owned Karnataka NeeravariNigama Ltd (KNNL) on Friday, he asked the officials to take the implementation of the project as a ‘challenge’ and prove that the Stare Government is very much committed to ensure drinking water to the people living in the most dried region in the State.

M B Patil

In response to an information that among the eight water harvesting structures of the Yettinahole project, six had been completed, the minister instructed the engineers to see that water will be impounded during next monsoon and drain it into dried up tanks along the sides of the main canal.

Stating that the main contention of those who are opposing the project was related to doubt on the extent of yield, the minister said: "By doing this we can prove that our estimation of over 24.4 tmcft of water yield in the Yettinahole project could be proved."

On the progress of works on the Upper Bhadra project, the minister asked the officials to hasten up the Ajjampur tunnel connecting the main canal of the Upper Bhadra project.

Patil urged the engineers to ensure that water could be drawn into main canal, and fill up the barren tanks in and around Chitradurga and other areas by December next.

The minister was also briefed on the progress of other projects, being executed by KNNL including Singatalur,Upper Tunga, Karanja, Tubachi Bableshwar, Markandeya, Varahi, Bennethora, Amarja, Upper and Lower Mullamari projects.

The minister had also urged the officials to utilize all the Rs 5348 crore of grants provided to the KNNL for the year and create assets for the state.

R Rudraiah, Managing Director, KNNL, Rakesh Singh, Principal Secretary, Water Resources Department, Gurupadaswamy, Secretary Water resources and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.

Politicians of coastal regions have proved they can do nothing to protect the interest of the people whom they represent. A few of them have conflict of interest in the project and others are His Masters Voice. This summer will be a testing scale and people of DK will rise in revolt when they face acute water shortage. Government want to spent entire budget allocated and complete the project as much possible before onset of summer and to salvage as much possible. Whether project will be completed or water will reach parched districts is none of their concern. They have invested lot of political and personal capital in this utopian theme and project and it should not be dried up before the due share reach them. This intention can be read from his greedy face. He is motivating his official so that arrest and detention of MD of KNNL shall not be an impediment to move forward. It is for sure, now or never. Everybody know there may not be another chance as Congress may not come to power at all in Karnataka......!

I go crazy about this project. One side, court raised objection on this project. Green panel went to court against this project. Whole district is against this project. So many reports says false reports submitted initially and there is no enough water to supply... yesterday only I ready instead of some 200 tress to be cut, project team cut 800 trees... mid of all these.. this minister is saying expedite the project....

Let the politicians from our district - all of them - wear bangles and go to the Vidhana Soudha. Politicians from the other districts are worried about their people but the politicians of our district who were elected to safeguard our interests have stabbed us in our backs. When their colleagues from other districts snatch water from us and take it to their districts, our spineless fellows support this act! Is this why we had elected them? With what face are they facing the people of Dakshina Kannada? Not a single politician from this district has the guts to stand up and oppose this project although they know very well that the people from this district will have to suffer the consequences if Nethravathi river is diverted.

It is true that kolar, chtradurga, chikbalapur etc are having acute shortage of water. Of course they need water very badly at least for drinking. But water is simply utilised by the big fat industries in our area and nobody talk about it.

If there is a river flowing in these districts with lot of water, will the people and the Great POLITICIANS of Kolar, Chickaballapur, Tumakuru and surrounding areas allow to divert the water to Coastal Districts if there is no waterhere? I bet, there would have been violent protests in these regions.
This arrogant government and its MLA's will be shown the Exit Door in 2018.That is sure. Jai Hind.
