Mangalore, Feb 6: Condolence meeting on the demise of former minister, Blasius D’Souza was held at Milagres Hall on Tuesday, February 5 evening.
Speaking on the occasion, western range IGP A M Prasad said that during his tenure as SP of the district, Blasius was district-in-charge minister of undivided Dakshina Kannada in Veerappa Moily’s cabinet. The versatility of Blasius helped him in solving many tough situations. He was indeed a great visionary of his time, Prasad opined.
Former minister BL Shanker said that it was a long struggle for Blasius to remain honest till his last days. He began his political career during his college days whereas most of the people actually join politics at the age when Blasius passed away. However, it was the will of God that has superceded all human aspirations, he added.
Politicians are blamed without reason from people who watch politics from far but one should not forget that a politician has to sacrifice his family’s well being, in order to contribute to the society, BL Shanker asserted.
District commissioner, M Maheshwar Rao, recalled that his interactions with Blasius were a great experience. He was the seasoned politician with in-depth knowledge of all regional issues.
Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, in his opening note, said that Blasius sacrificed himself for the welfare of the society. His yeomen service to the district populace would ever remain, he added.
Photo clippings of Blasius D’Souza were displayed at the meeting and his portrait was garlanded by the dignitaries.
Former MLAs’, Yogish Bhat and U T Khader, Dr K Devaraj, principal of SDM College of Business Management, B Madhava, district secretary of CPI (M), Sharada Achar, former councilor of Mangalore City Corporation, well known orthopedic surgeon Dr Shantaram Shetty, Capt Ganesh Karnik, MLC, former minister BA Moideen and others were present on the occasion.
Ivan D’Souza, president of District Congress Committee in his welcome address urged the district administration to rename Karavali circle located in front of the late Blasius D'Souza's ancestral house as ‘Blasius Circle’, as a fitting tribute to his contributions to the city.
