Udupi, Feb 15: The reckless driving of ore-laden trucks on National Highway 17 has yet again caused an accident near Thenka Yermal milk dairy here.  A marauding ore-laden truck collided with a Vodafone pick-up vehicle on Thursday February 14.

The accident was such ghastly that the Vodafone vehicle was completely damaged and two persons including the driver travelling the vehicle were serious injured.  Both the injured have now been admitted to a private hospital in the city.  Hospital sources said that they are still in critical condition.

The injured have been identified as Santosh D'Souza (30), resident of Mangalore and Charles Mitun Shiri (26), a Vodafone representative.

The accident on the National Highway resulted in traffic jam for quite a long time before the police came and cleared the road with the help of a crane.

Sources informed that the reckless driving of ore-laden truck driver, Ramesh K, resident of Natarajapuram, Namakkal district in Tamil Nadu, was the prime cause for the accident. He too has sustained minor injuries in the accident and is recuperating in Padubidri hospital.

This justifies the demand for installing Speed Governors in the vehicles which the lorry and bus operators are opposing on flimsy grounds. As far as ore lorries are concerned it is high time that the administration ban them or all 'secular' and 'communal' organisations should forget their differences and join together to stop this menace because it is everyday problem and the ore lorries do not distinguish between caste, creed or religion. I wish early recovery of the injured.
