Mangaluru: 12-year old Avil Saldanha from Bajpe succumbs to rabies

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 5: It is unfortunate that rabies continues to claim lives although affective treatment is available for the disease. A boy from Tarikambla near Bajpe fell prey to this deadly disease on Saturday February 4.

Avil Preetam Saldanha (12), son of Prema Saldanha, lost his battle with rabies. He was bitten by the domestic cat at his residence. It is also being said that a bat had scratched him when climbing a tree. Although he was never bitten by a dog, the possibility of coming into contact with dog's saliva when playing in mud cannot be ruled out, locals said.

After he became seriously ill on the evening of Friday, Avil was rushed to Father Muller Medical College Hospital here immediately. However, he breathed his last on Saturday morning without responding to treatments.

Avil was a brilliant sixth standard student of Parochial school at Bajpe. His mother, Prema, works as coolie. At the advice of the doctors, all the family members of Avil were injected with anti-rabies vaccine.

It may be recalled that in the recent past, villagers had, during the Gram Sabha, expressed apprehension about spread of rabies fast in Bajpe and nearby areas where the menace of street dogs has been acute. Reckless disposal of decomposed waste and remains of non-vegetarian food has been aggravating the problem, and the administration has failed in its duty to regulate the problem, the locals said.

Very Sad and shocking news indeed!

life is precious . We need to take care. Some times due to our negligence we fail to take care of our body and end up like this.

May God be gracious to his mother and brother. May the soul of Avil REST IN PEACE.

A very tragic case. I would just like to correct a factual inaccuracy in the article. The article says there are effective treatments available for rabies. This is incorrect. There is vaccination to prevent it but once the disease develops it is 100% fatal and there is no treatment. Also another note, it is not only dogs who spread it, can get it from cats too and as it may be in this case bats are known to carry rabies and spread it too.

Very shocking news. There must be stringent programmes to eradicate street dogs who bite and cause rabies. Animal right activists may be against it but human lives are important. Feeling sad for a life which lost at very tender age.

When it is a case of suspected rabies it is essential that immediate treatment is meted. Perhaps in this particular case it was not diagnosed on time and hence the tragedy.

I offer my sincerest sympathies to the bereaved family and particularly the parents.

A teen boy, supposed to be grown and flourish his fame was snatched away by the destiny, really my heart melted by reading this news.
All street dogs/cats to be eliminated without caring for peta or anything, Are they coming now to rectify this unexplainable damage to mother of this boy?
