M'lore: Magnum 2008 - 'One Step Ahead' begins at Varsity Campus

Mangalore, Feb 20: A two-day national inter-collegiate festival entitled "MAGNUM 2008" under the theme 'One Step Ahead' was organized by the Mangalore University's department of post-graduation studies and research in commerce and management, at the Yakshagana Kala Mandira in Mangalagangotri here on Tuesday February 19. This fest is being organized on Tuesday February 19 and Wednesday February 20,  under the aegis of the Commerce association and Knowledge circle.  

Speaking on the occasion K M Kaveriappa, vice-chancellor of the Mangalore University, in his presidential address  urged "Underprivileged and neglected should be  brought to the main stream of the society by including them in the development activities. The fruits of development must reach all. The progress achieved by the country in various sectors should reach the poorest of poor," he added. Further appreciating the efforts made by the University in organizing an event like Magnum 2008, he said that it was indeed a great platform for students to improve their personalities.  

Earlier K N Vijay Prakash, managing director of the Devaraj Urs Backward Classes, Development Corporation Ltd, inaugurated the function by lighting the traditional lamp in the company of other august guests. In his  speech Prakash nostalgically recollected the contribution of Prof Kaveriappa  particularly with regard to his interesting teaching methods and the way in which he used to interact with his students.    

Further he said "youth should have a dream in their life. By inculcating good values, they should come up in life.". He also exhorted the students and the management to do something productive which would propel the University to even greater heights.  According to him "One can attain success only through hard work. Students should also take part in extra curricular activities." He urged students to use opportunities to test their skills and sense of competency and achievement. These events and competitions will help to instill confidence in every student, he opined. In conclusion, he wished the visionaries of the Magnum 2008 all success.
 
Dr K Sunder Naik, registrar of Mangalore University in his speech laid emphasis on the importance of having a successful vision to achieve success and also inculcate good values in life. "It is the duty of the teachers and parents to encourage their children and appreciate them so that they are encouraged to overcome challenges. We live in this world only once, but we have to live a quality life. By living a quality life, we can increase our creativity and confidence," he said.  

Also on the occasion Sahyadiri Institute of Technology principal Dr D L Prabhakar gave a speech. Dr Y Muniraju, senior scale lecturer and staff advisor in the department of commerce, Mangalore University, proposed the vote of thanks while the inaugural programme was compered by Rubeena Shifa. Various competitions were also held on the occasion.
