Mangalore, Feb 20: Mangalore University has won 10 prestigious awards, seven for the year 2006-07 and the rest for the year 2005-06, in recognition of the yeoman's work rendered by volunteers in men's and women's categories under NSS scheme, announced Prof Gopal, NSS coordinator of Mangalore University here at a press conference on Wednesday February 20.

Detailing the awards, the coordinator said that the University has been honoured with awards like the best University from the perspectives of NSS programmes, best NSS units, NSS coordinators and best volunteers under women and men categories for the year 2006-07, he said.  

When asked about the names of the recipients, Gopal informed that the title of the best volunteers in the women's category goes to Manjusha Hebbar and Hardhika Shetty, students of the city's St Agnes College and the title of best NSS volunteer in men's category has been bagged by Kishor of Sri Dhavala College of Moodbidri. St Agnes and SDM College of Ujire have shared the award for the best NSS units for the same year.

Speaking about the awards for the year 2005-06, Gopal added the best NSS coordinator award goes to Prof Krishna Murthy of SDM College, Ujire and Usha Nayak of Sri Venkataramana College, Karkala while Shakeela Banu of the same college has been selected for the best volunteer award.

The awards will be presented to the winners at 'Yavanika' by governor Rameshwar Thakur, he added.    

Mangalore University has also bagged three Indira Gandhi national awards, two for the year 2006-07 and one for the year 2005-06, Gopal said. Moreover, Shakeela Banu of Sri Venkataramana Women's College, Karkala has been selected for the 20th world tour
