Bengaluru: Home minister justifies denial of permission for BJP's bike rally

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Sep 6: State home minister, Ramalinga Reddy, said that the police department had to turn down the request for permission sought by BJP to take out a motor bike rally titled 'Mangaluru Chalo', as the party failed to provide information sought by police department.

"Prima facie it was found that the aim of holding the said rally was to disrupt peace in society. The government has the onus of maintaining law and order situation in the state. Therefore we had to take over 800 persons into preventive custody," he explained.

Reddy said that BJP leaders failed to provide information asked for by the police within the limits of three commissionerates and three areas falling under the jurisdictions of district superintendents of police relating to 'Mangaluru Chalo' bike rally. Therefore the department had to turn down permission, he stated.

Was it not the responsibility of the party organizing this rally to provide details as to how many people were expected to leave in bike rallies which were proposed to begin from five centres in the state? If they wanted to hold such a lengthy rally covering about 400 km, they should have known that it was expected of them to furnish all the information," he stated.

Questioned about the fact that during BJP rule, Congress rally had been extended security by the government, he said that Congress had then fought against corruption and peace was never disrupted. He said that the very aim of holding the bike rally now was not honest or justifiable.

The home minister pointed out that holding of rallies passing through highways gives rise to various problems including increased traffic density. He said that the BJP wanted to disrupt peace in Dakshina Kannada district which is peaceful now.

A good government would have allowed the rally and wiped out the threat of communal violence if any by posting more police force.
