Mangalore: Experts Speak on Yoga Benefits at National Seminar

Mangalore, May 28: Hailing yoga as one of the greatest contributions ever made by India to humanity, Mangalore university vice-chancellor K M Kaveriappa opined that yoga coupled with medication helps people in achieving fine coordination between mind and body and in leading a peaceful, healthy life.

Addressing the participants at the national seminar on yoga therapy jointly organized under the aegis of the department of human consciousness and yogic science of the university, Dharmanidhi Yoga Peeta and Yoga Practioners Association of India here on Tuesday May 27, he said yoga has also carved out a niche for itself in foreign countries as well apart from India, and has created ample employment opportunities for the yoga practitioners.

Realizing the power of yoga in releasing stress, improving concentration and bringing peace of mind, big companies have been providing yoga training to their personnel, he noted. Bangalore university former vice-chancellor Prof Siddappa said that yoga, an ancient method of treatment and exercise, has witnessed grand revival during the last few decades.

Department of  human consciousness and yogic science chairman Dr K Krishna Bhat impressed upon the need to adhere to healthy lifestyle besides following the yoga regimen. He strongly held himself in favour of fully concentrating on food while eating, and advised people to shun watching television while consuming food and also the increasing practice of going to bed late. Bhat informed that his department was conducting a two week 'Chandrayana' course which helps obese people to reduce their weight. Various resource persons who presented papers at the seminar, impressed on the need to have a healthy lifestyle and eating habit, for Yoga therapy to be very effective. Yoga is found to be particularly beneficial for people with psychosomatic disorders, Bhat noted.

Subrahmanyam K, a student of yogic sciences of the university, explained about a study conducted by the department on a group of people facing problems associated with varicose veins and how yoga therapy could significantly reduce their ailment within a month. Another research scholar Udaykumar K spoke about managing sinusitis with the help of yoga. One more research scholar Jayasettiaseelan dealt with the subject of treating rheumatoid arthritis with the help of yoga therapy.

BAARC programme officer Prof Chandrachud and registrar Prem Kumar were present.
