Bengaluru: Fight against 'imposition' of Hindi intensifies, aggressive campaign planned

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sep 19: The protest against the 'imposition' of Hindi in Karnataka has intensified, with language activists and politicians planning to launch an aggressive campaign seeking constitutional amendment to ensure equality among all Indian languages.

At an event entitled 'Towards Linguistic Equality’ organised by Banavasi Balaga, high court lawyer Manu Kulkarni said though the Constitution emphasised equality and protection to oppressed people like the minorities, it had not dwelt on language equality.

The provisions of eight Articles (343 to 351), listed under Part XVII of the Constitution, have been written to promote Hindi as the administrative language and they do not talk about linguistic equality.

Hence, the best way forward for regional languages was to bring amendment in Part XVII of the Constitution. With this, regional languages will be treated on par with Hindi, he said.

“The central government is carrying out ‘linguistic genocide’ of the country’s regional languages,” alleged Senthil Nathan, secretary of Campaign for Language Equality and Rights.

The movement to save regional languages had gathered pace over the past two years. He said many languages, such as Bhojpuri and Maithili, were billed as dialects of Hindi, a fact which the speakers of those languages opposed, he added.

On February 21, 2018, on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, a national level convention will be held. Bengaluru has been chosen as the location of the convention as Karnataka has taken the lead in the fight to protect regional languages, he said.

At the upcoming convention, a draft language policy will be announced. About 44 languages from across the country will be represented in the convention, he added.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) activists are planning to storm into metro stations to pull down signage in Hindi if CM Siddaramaiah’s directions are not obeyed.

KRV state president T A Narayana Gowda said Hindi had not been removed from Namma Metro stations even after directions from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

"We will meet the chief minister next week and urge him to ensure that his directions are obeyed. Otherwise, the Vedike will take matters into its own hands,” he said.

A protest in Delhi is also planned, where leaders from all states will join together to voice out against the imposition of Hindi, he added.

Nothing against learning Hindi as a third or fourth language. But not at the expense of Kannada - be it on Road signs or bank documents or any govt papers. Kannada was never imposed on DK. It was always the common language and school medium even before independence. Karnataka exists only since 1956. Long before that we have had Kannada scholars like Shivram Karanth, Govind Pai etc. First Kannada Newspaper was published in Mangalore. First Kannada Science Encyclopedia and Childrens Encyclopedia were created in Mangalore by Karanth. So we need to be proud of our heritage in Kannada.

well said, state language is very important and should more prominent in Signboards, bank challans and all other public communication. if not checked, slowly and surely state language will disappear and only hindi , english will be there. we should understand that in all non-hindi states there is big population in semi-urban and rural areas who know only state language.

Let Sidhamaiah and KRV not forget that Hindi was allowed in the state 50 years ago by his own Congress Party, at a time when T.N. and Kerala opposed it since these states were ruled by non-congress parties. In Karnataka Hindi was not imposed. Hindi was accepted and introduced in the state. Today there are thousands of college students in the state opting Hindi as a second language. Now why are they taking a U turn and doing what other states did 50 years ago? Presently Kannada is being overshadowed and erased by Tamil and Malayalam. Actually these two languages are being imposed in Karnataka and not Hindi. If you want to fight BJP at the centre better take up some worthy issues like unemployment, inflation, etc. Don’t rake this filthy issues like language and state flag just for the sake of opposing BJP.

I am afraid before North Indians Tamilians will demand for merger of Bangalore with Tamil Nadu. I see Tamilians and Malayalees are more assertive in imposing their language and culture in Karnataka. Well educated northerners mind their own business while the uneducated working class are prone to criminal activities. They are least bothered about languages.

CM Siddu should answer one question - In what language should Rahul Gandhi, VP of congress should address when he comes to Karnataka ? If he cannot answer that honestly, he has no business to prod this break India forces which promote linguistic parochialism. By putting Hindi signboards along side with Kannada sign boards, nobody is imposing Hindi. These are for people who come to Karnataka and may not know either Hindi or Karnataka. Having brought up in DK, I learnt Kannada, Tulu, Beary, Hindi, Konkani, English and little bit of Malayalam too. Hindi is just another language and has been seen that way. Big deal is made out of nothing for some political gains

Malayalam and Tamil is not forced by the government ,that is the difference..Is it the case with Hindi...
Govt of India came up with a 3 language formula in 1960's .I.e South Indian states should learn Hindi and North Indian states should learn a Dravidian language..Only South Indian states followed that directivr and North Indian states betrayed it from day one...because they felt Dravidian languages are inferior to Sanskrit and it's descendants...Only Tamil Nadu had spine and they started non hindi agitation for the sole reason.. nobody blames North Indian states for not followung that formula ...Instead blame Tamil Nadu

Hindi is widely spoken language in India. It's promotion should be gradual.
However Hindi shouldn't be imposed. If imposed, north Indians for whom Hindi is mother tongue will be at advantages position, they will speak, we will have to listen and sit quiet, will be subjected under them.
Our knowledge is far more than them; but because of our Hindi language draw back, why should we languish behind?
For this reason, for safeguarding our peoples interest, Hindi shouldn't be imposed against the wish of the people!

Hindi is Islamic origin Pakistani language. India should India own language and not foreign origin language like Hindi.

This government is functioning like an Islamic government since Hindi which they are shoving at tax payers cost is Islamic origin language.

Banking exams should be conducted in all the pure Indian languages, presently it is limited to the Pakistani language Hindi only.

Pakistani language Hindi imposition in schools all over India as compulsory second or third language should be abolished.

Pakistani language states have 1 language formula whereas Indian language states h ave 3 language formula. That is proof that the Pakistani language govt in Delhi wants to replace indian languages with the Pakistani Islamic origin language Hindi.

Language equality should be implemented in Indian constitution.

Neither Hindi nor Urdu originated in Pakistan. Both are Indian languages. Hindi originated from Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit. And Urdu originated from Hindi, Persian, Arabic and Turkish. Both languages originated before Pakistan came into existence.
