Riyadh: Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive in historic decision

Riyadh, Sep 27 (Agencies): Saudi Arabia will allow women to drive from next June, state media said Tuesday, in a historic decision that makes the Gulf kingdom the last country in the world to permit women behind the wheel.

The shock announcement comes after a years-long resistance from women's rights activists, some of whom were jailed for defying the ban on female driving.

The decision risks riling religious conservatives and is part of the government's major reform drive, conceived by powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"The royal decree will implement the provisions of traffic regulations, including the issuance of driving licences for men and women alike," the Saudi Press Agency said.

It added that the decree would be implemented from June 2018.

The announcement follows a dazzling gender-mixed celebration of Saudi national day at the weekend, the first of its kind, which aimed to spotlight the kingdom's reform push, analysts say, despite a backlash from religious conservatives.

Men and women danced in the streets to drums and thumping electronic music, in scenes that are a stunning anomaly in a country known for its tight gender segregation and an austere vision of Islam.

Women were also allowed into a sports stadium -- previously a male-only arena -- to watch a musical concert, a move that chimes with the government's "Vision 2030" plan for social and economic reform as the kingdom prepares for a post-oil era.

With more than half the country aged under 25, Prince Mohammed, the architect of Vision 2030, is seen as catering to the aspiration of the youth with an array of entertainment options and promoting more women in the workforce.

The gambit to loosen social restrictions, which had so far not translated into more political and civil rights, seeks to push criticism over a recent political crackdown out of the public eye, some analysts say.

Authorities this month arrested more than two dozen people, including influential clerics and activists, in what critics decried as a coordinated crackdown.

Ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia has some of the world's tightest restrictions on women, despite ambitious government reforms aimed at boosting female employment.

Under the country's guardianship system, a male family member -- normally the father, husband or brother -- must grant permission for a woman's study, travel and other activities.

But the kingdom appears to be relaxing some norms as part of the Vision 2030 plan.

Tuesday's announcement comes at a crucial time for Saudi Arabia.

The OPEC kingpin is in a battle for regional influence with arch-rival Iran, bogged down in a controversial military intervention in neighbouring Yemen and at loggerheads with fellow US Gulf ally Qatar.

The 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed is set to be the first millennial to occupy the throne in a country where half the population is under 25, although the timing of his ascension remains unknown.

Already viewed as the de facto ruler controlling all the major levers of government, from defence to the economy, the heir apparent is seen as stamping out traces of internal dissent before any formal transfer of power from his 81-year-old father King Salman.

In one way it is very good that woman have been gaining some of their basic rights back. But I am worried about the thousands of Indian and foreign drivers whose services will no longer be required , and their families who depended upon their livelihood are going to go through some hard times. Coming back to India is not a viable alternative since we do not have a dearth for drivers.

GOOD ACTION/DECREE FROM THE HONOURABLE KING SALMAN OF SAUDI ARABIA.

CONGRATULATIONS AND WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST TO WOMEN OF SAUDI ARABIA.

Driving Licence to Women in Saudi Arabia was a Long issue.
This decree would largely benefit women particularly to Saudi Arabia.
Most expatriate drivers will loose their business and jobs and may be sent to their home country.

Saudi Kings now and previously were in favour of freedom to females since very beginning. However the Mutthawvaas (Religious Police of KSA) had in mind of loosing their male domination.

Lately and Lastly Saudi Arabians woke up from slumber.
Women's issues were crawling at a snails pace since 1400 in Saudi Arabia due to few religious fundamentals even now with this decree they are not happy.

Freedom to humans cannot be hidden under the bushel.

Camels and Donkeys were existed prior to 1400 and even today people are driving camels and donkeys.

Since camels and Donkey's were existed Prophet Mumammad drove Camels and Donkeys.

In my opinion supposedly Cars and trucks were existed prophet Muhammad would have driven cars and trucks and allowed his Wives also to drive .

Accordingly Cars and planes were existed during the time of Jesus, Jesus would have driven the Cars and might have travelled in the plane.

Jesus Christ the King of Kings and the King of Peace drove Donkey in the Streets of Jerusalem people came out largely saying Hosanna, Hosanna and Hosanna in the highest which was predicted in the Old Testament.

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

PRAISE THE LORD AND HIS NAME BE GLORIFIED.

    Good move by Saudi...
But India is moving in opposite direction...
It's lot of fun to read comments from Sanghis speaking on women empowerment..Forgot they stand at 125 on UN Gender inequality index whereas Saudi is just 50.. Now it would increase its rank drastically..

Saudi has better guardianship low, better representation of female in parliament,Better laws on domestic violence ,better education ,better healtcare for women...

Truth is bitter but you need to give it due credit

Though it is little late but still far better than never…. Country like Saudi too realized the importance of “Women Freedom”… Few decades back we “Men” always say our half partner…”Keep Quite” what you know but now for our each & every decision, we take opinion and advice from our half partner. It looks like “Enchina Kiri Kiri Ye” but always remember our “women” sacrifice their life for their family well beings only. Even in her “Pray” too she asks and demands something from GOD every time for her family members only

Yep Bro that is why we have better Gender inequality index of 125 whereas Saudi is just 50
Better education penetration (women- Atleast sec education) of just 35.3 whereas
    Saudi is 63%

We have better representation of women in parliament I.e 12.2% whereas Saudi is 19.9%

If we look at maternal death and other women related issues it is even worse...

While Indians thought women issue is Saudi issue or Muslim issue ...Saudis did their job quietly...Sanghis are still obsessed with reforming Saudi women...

Women enjoyed their freedom here ...that is why they are getting laticharged for speaking against sexual harassment.. The guy who abandoned his own wife is now speaking of abandoned women of only particular community...

What we got is only wild fantasies but Saudi moved forward...
There is no medicine for being under delusion

I think you are an Indian, living in Saudi...for you that country has given you the much needed job and money so you are happily saying that women in saudi enjoy more freedom than Indian women but FYI every Mangalorean knows a lot of things about these gulf countries and especially Saudi so dont fool us with your international data.
I know here in India women get beaten up for speaking up but there they are not even allowed to speak and now due to international pressure Saudi rulers are taking some positive steps.

This action is a good decision for Saudi Arabia, For many years the people came from India to work for the house driver in the Saudi nation, House driver for many people because women were not allowed to drive, This decision by the Saudi nation will definitely be a great loss for Indians house driver employees , All these decisions are not against us, but such decisions are necessary for the modern era, Saudi Country is a model for the whole world, Saudi Arabia is an immediate response to the poor in the world, But the media does not broadcast all this.

As quran or hadees never prohibit women from driving, the decesion of saudi govt is welcome. But similarly saudi regime must take care of responding to anti islamic forces outside who try to bring changes in shariah where the word of quran and the hadees should be final . DRIVING IS ALLOWED BUT DANCING WITH WEARING BURKA IN PUBLIC MALL IS COMPLTELY HARAAM AND KUFFAARRIC. there should be a group of rieghteous people who just propagate true path and interrupt them from going behind immorality .....as depicted in quran

Nawaz be a intelligent indian rather than a stone age brained. Why can't women wear what they like rather what men command them to wear. Men can do anything sleep with 7 women but women has to prove virgin etc and many more rules which is out dated and has no meaning to it.

Conservative for women and liberal for men which is called hypocrites law and has to be changed. It will be soon with a changes in gas prices and economical down turn and political uneasy environment makes every soul to change and to be on thier knees. Either be ethist and do good rather religious with hypocrites.
